I cropped and resized it in GIMP.

It looks okay to me, but I'm wondering if it's too small, or is too pixilated. I'm asking because I might be oblivious to this if it were an issue, due to already knowing what the image is supposed to look like.

I think it looks fine, but if you'd like to see if you can get something closer to what you want, you could post the original picture and we can give a try at resizing it for you.

For a picture depicting gloom, I can't see the expression on the model's face. The perspective of the arch heading into the model's shoulder is also askew.

I like it. My daughter finally made one for me (just pasted it to my profile a couple of minutes ago) - I love it due to the personal nature of the time she put in and how she put it together just for me. Go with your first instinct, it's probably right.
