Ode to Internet

The internet is a great source of first-hand information, prime entertainment, and nigh-unlimited resources when you know where to look. It also affords you low pressure to interact. You're afforded at least a 1 minute window to respond to people addressing you in chat or AIM before they wonder where you've gone off too, and even then it's not the end of the world if you don't.

But most importantly, the internet is a place where you're stripped of everything but your mental caliber. Your race, sex, age, and wealth are only given to others if you wish them to be. As long as you prove yourself to be shrewd and/or talented, people will give you respect. They'll still make assumptions about who you are, of course, but it's a reflection of what they see in what you put out there. It's such a refreshing change from the outside world, for those who know how to take advantage of it. That's why people who are so embedded in popular culture and shallow judgments of character never use the internet to its full potential; because they keep attempting to shape it to the outside world. The internet is so much more than that.
