since we got the greatest guitarist thread, i'll make one for drummers...

mine!

1. danny carey - tool (kick ass... what was the tempo again?)
2. josh freese - a perfect circle (i find him pretty playful with his beats...)
3. lars ulrich - metallica (not that fast, not that slow but crisp and concise)
4. kenneth olsson - tristania (another crisp drummer)
5. joey jordison - slipknot (unconventional...*gasp* i've been watching vids of him play)

josh freese... tell me about HOW many projects he has worked on in the last 10 years? have you heard his solo CD (yes - he actually has a solo album). Talk about the very definition of man-whore

Haha, I agree... he is a drum machine.
But, we could have runners up too!

I also like Raymond Herrera (Fear Factory)
He does a crazy double pedal, IMO, especially with speed changes and odd counts (dont know drum terminology, but like, instead of hitting all four beats per measure, he can hit three and rest one, and mix it up with accuracy)

Again, I have to categorize them by gender/whatever. Here are a few:

-Neil Peart. Rush drummo
-Horacio -El Negro- Hernández. Michael Camilo's Drummer / Latin Jazz drummer
(I recommed Michel Camilo is worth it)
-Derek Roddy. ex-Hate Eternal drummo. Death Metal Drummer, now in a Jazz proyect.
-Steve Gadd, Dave Weckl, Vinnie Colaiuta on the jazz scene.

Peart is pretty badass. Also a fan of Sean Reinert, Mike Portnoy, Flo Mounier, any of the guys that have drummed for Origin (mostly for their speed), and I'm sure there's more.

. Just watch the DVD "The Song Remains the Same". Excellent.

. Not technically fantastic, but good none the less, to be able to cover such a diverse mix of musical styles that Radiohead come up with. Always original, and must be hard to keep up with the genius of Thom Yorke & Johnny Greenwood.

- Plays with Paul Weller. His brother Alan plays with Oasis, but he's not as good as Steve.

- Don't know who their drummer is, but I've seen them live, and they're really tight all the way through. Really fast stuff too, must be knackering.

- I think this guy is called Omar something or other. He's pretty good. Incidentally as a bit of trivia, the guitarist (Steve Craddock) now plays with Paul Weller in his 'super band'. Looks really young in this video.

Also, the guy out of Cream, and the guy out of Muse I recall are pretty good too.

I'd add Chad Smith of RHCP too. Oh and Dave Grohl is generally all round rock legend material, for my day & age at least. In fact the drummer in Foo Fighters is pretty good (is he called Taylor Hawkins, can't remember exactly).

#1 Danney Carey (His rhythms are unreal)
#2 Joey Jordison (Say what you will about Slipknot, this guy is amazing)
#3 Lars Ulrich (Amazing classic rock style)

(the entire song is amazing with the drums, but Orri becomes immortalized from 5:00 onward). Best drummer ever.

...and I second Matt Tong from Bloc Party
