I got the idea of this thread from the Art Challenge thread. I'm really into photography and I think photography would be a more organized challenge because it could be done easier. I want to do a contest for each day and have a vote between everyone who participates on a scale of 1-5, 5 being the best. So, everyday I'll choose a topic or someone will suggest a topic and as you can guess people post their photo. To start I think we should do a picture of clouds. I really hope this thread is successful.

Here is my cloud picture:

I don't have very interesting clouds in my area today.

But I'll participate in this thread from time to time (and catch up in the other one, too). It's nice to see art getting some more attention around here.

That's very cool. Question, Are you in a bus? and is the background meant to be part of the photo?
Rating:4 1/2 (5 if the background is meant to be there)

I was on an empty train, and was trying to get shots of the nice sunset out the window. There wasa bit of reflection picked up in some of the pictures, but I think they add a little to the effect.

If it was an empty train, it looks like someone left their baggage unattended.

Motion blur, that's why they look so odd.

Rating:4 1/2 (5 if the background is meant to be there)

I question your rating system. Are we basing this solely on what's in the image, or the artistic merit of the image?

If it's the former, consider me out. I'm not trying to be rude to tp6226, but usually such a shot wouldn't fly in a serious photo exhibit. The motion blur is extremely evident, the reflection greatly detracts from what we want to look at, not to mention it interferes with the negative space.

As for the water shots:

Here's my take on "water". (I love completely unplanned events that turn out to be awesome compositions. Kind of gives me the Cartier-Bresson "decisive moment" vibe, very rare.)

The story: group of Eastern European guys in a canalbike being absolutely captivated by my neighbour's houseboat, which has an uninhabited (and highly squattable) appearance. They hung around for like 15 minutes, me just kind of following their antics from behind my PC.

I think you confuse artistic merit with the more technical side of things. These two are not synonymous. Something can be very visually interesting without showing great technical skill; conversely, something can be technically completely polished, yet boring as hell.

Completely naturalistic photography can be nice, but there is a huge risk of having a generic "stock photo" vibe. I appreciate it when it's clear someone actually took the picture and is giving whatever they're capturing their own touch. In tp's case, the motion blur makes the clouds all the more interesting, visually. I really dig the reflection, as it immediately tells you where the photo was shot from and adds another visually interesting element.

Vagrant: very nice, 4
zibber: I like the perspective, 3 1/2
runoverazebra: I love the balance of where things are placed, 4 second one, the clouds in the middle feel
a little awkward and throw it off a bit, 3
dalidaisy: the first one is okay, quaility could be better, 3 1/2 but I like it all in all. Second one, like it a
lot, 4 Third, nice as well 3

Guys, we're all rating these so rate the other ones too so that we can add the points.

Here's mine:

You'll receive a pat on the back... As far as I know it's just fun to show off your photography and here's just the place.

It's been two years since I last hovered around taking pics with my digital camera. Thus, most of the pictures that I post will be from my trip to Russia.

Clouds: A statue in Moscow. Taken with a Canon PowerShot SD1000.

Water: "Some cool metal fishermen on the seaside at Petrozavodsk, the port town from where we took a ferry to get to Kizhi." Taken with a camera phone.

How about wedding or nightclub photos for the next round? Or maybe romantic shots? Or ludicrous sights (I've got loads of those)? Architecture? etc.

Pheonix rising, all of your photos are very nice however, you should only choose one or two to be in the contest.
