So,am I the only person who notices the differences when posting on forums such as this,Dawkins net ect and other more..."mainstream" forums?
I can list so many differences but I'll leave someone else take the lead first.

People here tend to use spelling, grammar, punctuation. Pretty amazing.

My other main e-hangout is the Myspace video game forum. Those fuckers crack me up.

Any woman posts anything, even if she's a regular who's been there for years, the default response is to send nudes.

I get this on Xbox live also.If I mentioned I was pre-op TS it would probably be worse as then I would have the heteroflexibles to deal with.

I pretty much only frequent one other forum as often as I do this one.

And honestly; this place is like one of that other forum's good days, only every day

. I'd say this is for two reasons; this forum being an "INTJ" forum would attract members who at least have taken an MBTI test, and more likely have an understanding of other personality types - which I think might increase the likelihood that they would be understanding and respectful of others thought process' and opinions.

Secondly, because that other forum is primarily a "Gaming" forum with harsh restrictions against "spamming" and "controversial" topics. Together, this Dynamic Duo has managed to stifle anything resembling intelligent discussion in order to benefit the class of members which are unable to reconcile others' opinions with their own.

I think this has affected my posting style... My "speech" is unarguably "dumbed-down," and the subject matter is much more... mundane :/.

The post submission box also uses a different kind of text. The background is darker, it's much smaller, and I think the text is Arial. I have a feeling nibbling on the edge of my mind that this affects how I post, though I haven't been able to pinpoint how.

On the music forum I post at (the only other forum I go to), 90% of the people actually do use proper spelling and grammar. However, the posts I make there are much more personal due to the fact that it's relatively small, close-knit, and the established members all know each other on a first-name basis.

It's actually not too different from the INTJ forum in terms of subject matter; there are quite a few INTXs on there (I had them take the test a while ago; I thought I was IXTP back then). There's a lot more talk of meeting up in real life, and of "things that made/didn't make you smile today," sports, electronics, and of course music. Lots of sensory/emotional stuff, but it's generally presented in a way that's not (s/wh)impering and it probably helped me develop Se by leaps and bounds.

The differences I notice;

Poor grammar, spelling and syntax. A disporportionate amount of celeb' threads in relation to those of the intellectual variety.
Ignorance of psychology,sociology...well just universal ignorance really.
Cliques. An inablity to comphrehend the difference between transvestitism and gender identity disorder. An inablility to look at an arguement objectively. Double standards. Anti intellectualism. I could go on but I'm hungry so I need something to eat.

Presumably a thread for talking about celebrities.

Of the two other forums that I frequent or have frequented, one of them I've never had much trouble "navigating" (it's not very big and as it turns out, has a LOT of INTJs) and the other is bigger and I've always felt like an oddball or "out of place" (probably has a big variety of types).

I don't want to give the impression that I think it's all type-based though; I think age, level/kind of moderation, and the attitude of "core" members (just to name a few things) have a big effect on how comfortable types like INTJ would feel (heck, or just people in general).

This is definitely one of the "friendlier" forums I've been on. Most other forums seem a lot more elitist-and it is definitely harder to fit in as an outsider.

But how much can there be to say?

I guess we could pull that off here - if the results of CuriousJane's Disney Princesses thread is any indication. If I just posted a thread called "Paris Hilton" and in the OP said, "Go." We could probably get some mileage.

I've hung around richarddawkins.net and, I have to say, I didn't like it at all. It basically consisted of a bunch of people agreeing with each other about how stupid theists are. Boring and condescending. That's not to say this forum is devoid of those characteristics, but I notice it a lot less. Also, there is more variety in opinion here, which makes things far more interesting.

I've been online for well over a decade, and posted on dozens of message boards... But I've grown tired of them, and now I only post here and on a handful of personal finance boards, where my knowledge can actually make a difference in other people's lives.
