" from the BBC. I would hope that human kind is not so arrogant to think that we are the only ones in the Universe.

I would hope so too.

(Not trying to be a spelling Nazi, but it's Kepler.)

Yes, let's talk about this:

There is always the danger of taking things out of context, but starting with a title like "Artificial Structures ..." is at best monumentally poor word choice and at worst drawing an unwarranted conclusion.

OK, if the features appeared on earth they would be associated with biological activity. OK, some of the features are unusual in that natural forces tend not to produce such topologies (though it is not impossible).

Are these unexplained phenomena? Yes (at least at that time).
Do they warrant further investigation? Certainly.
Is a conclusion involving extraterrestrial life supported by the evidence? Absolutely not.

The only real discussions to have concern: (a) what combination of natural processes could have resulted in the observed features, and (b) where in the list of national research priorities should further exploration of these phenomena appear. I'm not a geophysicist so I'm afraid I'm not going to be much help with (a), although I am looking forward to hearing the conjectures of others. As for (b) I would vote for the bottom quintile.

Does anyone (Monte? Moriarty?) know why they're not using the HST to look for extrasolar Earth-like planets? Is there a technical reason that makes Hubble unsuited for it or is it just a matter of demand on Hubble's time for other projects?

Why would you hope that when you are already aware that the human race believes it is superior to all other animals and insects on the biosphere?

Perhaps I am hoping against hope, but I think it is silly to believe we are alone in the vastness of the Universe.

It's also good at catching people's attention. Hence the catchy titled.

The presenter mentions that NASA photoshops some of their pictures before releasing it. This rises the question as to why.

Before going further, one issue you need to see with NASA is that they basically have a monopoly on exploring space. Meaning they control the information and knowledge that is release to the public. If they had found evidence of alien life on Mars and decided not to disclose it, they could. There is no one that has the resources to be able to argue with NASA. No one else is doing any experiments to double check and verify the information NASA releases.

I think it is interesting that there is evidence of artificial structures on Mars and more research should be done on where they came from. But until NASA is willing to do research on it or until other groups are able to sent space probes of their own, we'll have to wait for the truth to come out.

As for your claim that it may be natural processes. It is entirely possible. Equally, it is entirely possible that they may be artificial. Can you prove that it is not? If no, then it is a possibility that should be considered.

I can answer your question, but since you didn't specifically ask me to, I won't though.
