Hello everyone!!

Alright, so what can I possibly say about myself? I'm a college freshman who's an undecided major -- mainly because I spend way too much time thinking about one major, and then wondering if I would be better off doing one of the other majors I had in mind, etc, etc.

As ironic as it sounds, I'm also a frequent chess player (go figure right?) and love reading up on random things and then being able to somehow logically put those things together. Naturally then, I'm pretty much a library dweller these days who doesn't speak up unless he really has to.

I'm so glad to have found a community with people who understand and experience (to some degree of relativity) the same things I do.

I am the very model of a modern Major-General,

It also has some INTJ interest...
I'm very well acquainted, too, with matters mathematical,
I understand equations, both the simple and quadratical,
About binomial theorem I'm teeming with a lot o' news,
With many cheerful facts about the square of the hypotenuse.
I'm very good at integral and differential calculus;

Enough trivia...welcome.

Well, the ones I have in mind at this point in time are either in (a) Math or (b) in Chemistry, but something along the lines of a research concentration. I'm somewhat into Computer Science, but I don't know if I would actually pursue that all the way to completion to an actual major.

I guess it depends on what I think will be the most useful in the next few years after I'll graduate. But then again, I did read somewhere that math majors (who pursue their major interest to a graduate level degree) tend to have better overall satisfaction than some of the other "money making" fields like medicine and such.

Hi crux!

Do you really have to declare a major? I think an Interdisciplinary Studies course seems good unless you really want to specialize.

Where in the library do you live?

Hi crux!

Where in the library do you live?

Anywhere between the 6th and 8th floors usually (8th floor is the highest floor of the undergrad library at my University), although I'll sometimes venture down to another floor just to browse around out of curiousity -- lucky for me, I'm not a cat otherwise I could get in trouble

I don't have to declare a major until next semester (around October I believe), but I guess its better to think of it sooner rather than later.

Why not do both? I hear math is a good support major for any other major. I wouldn't worry about the overall statisifcation thing. The bottom line is what makes you happy.

At the end of the day I always find that I'm more eager to work on things I want to work on, rather than wasting time doing the things that make me shudder.

It's funny that it was only after I realized it that I started having fun. You have until october and yeah I know your J side is tugging at you to figure it out. Try the intro courses for the subjects that form the basis for each major. You'll figure it out in time.

Or it can just come as a sudden rush like when you meet the most amazing woman in the world and you just click. Once you find her or your subject you won't have doubts.

I'm going to agreee with qwerty here. You don't pick your major, your major picks you. Take me, I spent the first few years taking introductory courses in everything (that was ok because my school had a common curriculum everyone had to satisfy). I found everything interesting, but nothing I loved.

Then I took an introductory economics class. I was in love from day 1. Everything just made so much sense, the perfect balance of theory and practical application. My only regret is that I never took any computer science classes. I think I may have enjoyed that.

Well, I definitely agree that in the end the major will end up finding me rather than I finding the major, but alas my J axis is definitely nagging me to figure things out for myself. I'm guessing I should probably spend a good amount of time this summer just going through some material from each of the subject areas and see which one clicks since I don't exactly have the freedom of infinite time.

Or it can just come as a sudden rush like when you meet the most amazing woman in the world and you just click. Once you find her or your subject you won't have doubts.

While I sure wouldn't mind it turning out this way, I still wonder if that's the way it will end up panning out or if the situation will be completely different.

Welcome, Crux! I couldn't decide either for the longest time. I flitted between around 6 different things, though settled on three of them. I'm sure it will come to you.

In any case, I hope you enjoy the forum!

Welcome to the forum crux!

I tend to avoid libraries for my own safety. I find I experience time leaps where one moment it's noon and the next minute they are chasing me out of the sci-fi section with brooms.

Good luck with the major!
