It just never ever escalates to "you're dumb" comments or somthign else like it that makes it a fight.

True.
Speaking of fights, it would be pretty neat if you and Drayakir could have an online fencing match together.
Is it possible to play an online fencing game between two players, with the bandwidth speed available nowadays?
Perhaps not realtime but you could mimic the fast reactions needed by each player only having say 2 seconds between each move.

It would be a weird computer simulation of the real thing, but could involve certain basic teachings?

"On guard!"

That would be fun. (if he/she? would oblige to fencing foil instead of saber because I'm a noob in foil anyway and have no clue about saber) We've been "petitioning" for a Nintendo Wii fencing game. But I was never sure how it would work out.
First problem is the reaction time. It really has to be a fast interaction because you react in literally split seconds when you see the person start something you have to be able to figure out what he/she is doing and react to it (and then they would have to do likewise). If all these reactions lagged a little, we're going to have to be standing around for a long time waiting for the next move...
Second problem, footwork... It's just not fencing without the footwork (unless you're wheelchair fencing of course).
Third problem is I don't know how we're going to be able to judge the touches. (or how we're going to land the touches in the first place) Maybe if you get the game hooked up to an actual dummy placed along a piste???

IMO, an actual bout is not probable. A lesson (which would usually be made up of very few steps forward/backward anyway), possibly.

"prêt"

If there's an online fencing match, I'll join. Used to fence, though I personally prefer saber, and wish to learn epee. Foil is probably ironically my weakest.

It's odd that a lot of people seem to enjoy saber, and yet there are very few people who fence saber in competitions.

Epee is like foil minus rules.

I never fenced epee with an actual epeeist, but it seems like short-lived fun to me...
Saber would most-likely be my weakest weapon. I'm pretty quick, but I lack strength and discipline. Remembering to get priority is something I have to work the hardest at.

EDIT:
Thank you to whoever split the thread...

I really wonder how that's going to turn out.

I watched this a while ago...

I couldn't understand what they judged it based on. The rules are different and all.

Can anyone tell whether it was a foil, saber or epee? Seems like a saber attack, but he could have been going for a flick...

What rules? sharp side into the flesh... pointy bit into the vitals...
Rules are for people who treat it as a game.

I have a foil, actually.

But I have no idea. I guess it'd be a bit like a game of rocks-paper, or something. Although, um. Yeah. If we do a meet-up, I'd definetely fence.

And as for Katana vs. rapier, well, a rapier is faster. With a Katana it's a swinging motion, whereas a rapier is a simple stab.

And don't get me started on broadswords. I love those things!

Katana has a stronger blade, and I have the advantage of being a trained fencer as well.

Do not have a rapier unfortunately.

Strong blade is useless if you can't move fast enough to make blade contact.
Also... if we're fighting with a katana, does that mean we don't have to fence on a piste?

Well fencing in a straight line is useless against someone who is not trained in the same way.

No sword has speed, the person using it has speed. A Rapier does have faster movements though, but would you really parry with a sword that could potentially cut through your own?

Sweet... I've always wanted to try literally... free fence.

Do you mean would I really parry against a sword " "?

You could parry with a rapier against a sword.

You'd have to have very fine control, to be able to guide it away from you, instead of a full-fledged parry. Kinda like... deflecting a blow from a stick. Your hands are obviously not as strong as a stick, but if you hit it in the side, with the flat of your hand, you can make it move so that you can avoid it, so it's really a combination of a parry and a dodge.

Reading this thread is like a 'written fencing match' between ShaiGar and Rei and Drayakir.

Guess there's truth in the saying:
"The pen is mightier than the sword".

(groan).

Only if the pen is really really sharp and the sword is really really small.

Weird, innit? My favorite was and still is Night Watch, although his old stuff is awesome too.
I even have an informal paper on him published somewhere.
