So, Who Else Laughs Randomly? None

One of the things that struck a chord with me when I was first reading descriptions of the INTJ type, was one profile that said that it was not uncommon for INTJs to laugh for no reason that was apparent to anyone else.

This is certainly true with me, but I also laugh for no reason that is readily apparent to me. Sometimes I will be thinking of something funny, or ironic, and I'll laugh, and will be looked at oddly. That's fine; I get that. Other times, however, I'll just feel a bubble of joy or energy and then I laugh out loud. Not the super villain laugh (not yet, anyway,) but quite an energetic laugh nonetheless. This happens multiple times a day, usually.

So, who else does this? Am I deteriorating into megalomania, or is this a usual trait for others of this type? I'm not really concerned in any way, but I am curious.

All the time. All the time. I am always thinking of some jokes that I crack up in my head and people wonder why I am laughing for no reason.

Yes, it's generally because I'm thinking of something funny that could happen or happened earlier.

I used to do this.

I learned to control it after a disastrous episode.
I was sitting in an important meeting and laughed at something I was thinking about that had nothing to do with the meeting.

The person who was speaking (was someone I didn't really get on with) and they took it rather personally. I never did find out what he was talking about......but apparently it was important!

This laughter is one of thee alleged INTJ things that applies to me but not the more random laughter you experience (and I never experience joy). There's always some reason, like a character in my head says, does or is something funny. At times I'll be spacing out so much that I forget and end up embarrassingly laughing a little outside of my head when other people are around, which I immediately stop as soon as it starts. I practice a great super villain laugh when I'm by myself, I think I've perfected it.

Yes to laughing for reasons not readily apparent to others; no to the bubble of joy thing.

Do I ever? My family and friends have gotten used to it over the years. Every time I do it, they just look at each other and say something like "I bet he's just remembered something he saw on The Simpsons last week."

I had one of those moments not two minutes ago. It happens to me all the time, especially the random bubbles of joy kind. I laugh a lot during the day due to the things going on in my head but mostly if I'm laughing it's because of a sudden overwhelming feeling of joy. My laughing is sometimes accompanied by clapping or jumping. I just can't contain myself. I'm not concerned about it though other people seem to be. I'm pretty sure my uncle thinks I have some sort of mental disorder so whenever I do it around him remembering that makes me laugh harder.

Oh, yes, both of those for me. Sometimes I'll just start to remember things that are absolutely hilarious, and I giggle. I don't really care if people think this is strange, because I've found it's just something that I do. Other times I'll feel giddy and bubbly for no reason, and I'll definitely laugh. It fuels the good mood.

Glad I'm not the only one.

The only thing I found on a brief search just now was the Compleat Idiot's Guide to the INTJ, under the FAQ

Not just for no reason at all, no. But I do remember funny things and laugh, thus confusing those "on the outside." xD

yes...I am frequently, without effort, creating great new humor in my head. I bank it and use it at a key moment, or don't use it and recall it later, or it disappears into the ether...plenty more where that came from.

Ahh, I had just pulled that up when I read your response! I'm actually thinking about printing that guide and handing it out to any who think they want to get closer. XD

The thing is that sometimes when people ask me what I am laughing at, I realise it is not that funny at all. It might be something like I thought of something then I realised that I got a bit of it wrong and I laugh at my mistake.

I've never laughed for no reason though I will grin like an idiot when I feel extremely happy.
Laughing out loud to a something funny in my own head isn't half as bad as the odd faces I will sometimes pull when I'm having a conversation/daydream in my head.

Like some others, yes to the first; no to the second. Sometimes I'll feel happy or sad for no immediately apparent reason as far as I know, but I'll usually find a way to be not sad or just enjoy the unexpected feeling of happiness/contentment/joy that I get.

Yes, I do that a lot actually, I feel 'tickled' for no apparent reason sometimes and I just release my internal mirth with laughter, especially when this 'ticklish feeling' gets exacerbated by situations and people. or it could be hormones going haywired...

Yes, I laugh without reason and at things that shouldn't be funny. I also laugh when I'm in pain. I do laugh at things I find funny though, so I'm not a complete nutter.

Laughter at the first two I mentioned usually stems from catching a glimpse of the world and how ridiculous my small portion of it is. It's like I glimpse how utterly small the latest annoyance-become-issue is and I look at it from outside myself and can't help laughing. I suppose you could say that might be a reason to laugh, but since the reason is little more then a sensation that things are ridiculous, I'm not so sure it is a conscious choice to laugh in the slightest. I would consider it akin to your bubble of joy.

Yes, definitely feel you on this one Rudy.
I'll remember something from hours ago, days ago, and bust up laughing for what looks like no apparent reason to those around me. KINDA AWKWARD! But if they knew the truth of it, they'd be busting up too =)

I do this a lot and garner some strange looks as a result, but I don't care! No one else needs to understand what's going on in my head but me. Plus, explaining would usually take the mickey out of it.

Definitely! Maybe it's an old memory, a new plot twist, or in general a new way of looking at things (based on my natural satirical sense of humor)...and I have to control a laugh, but a smile remains (like the Cheshire cat in Alice in Wonderland).

Almost definitely every time I laugh its because of something. I may have had a time where I've just been unable to realise what I'm laughing about because my minds been in too much of a hypnotic state to remember, for instance, when I'm very tired.

Not really random laughter but to those around me it may seem that way. For example, I will get together with a group of friends to watch tv once in a while. Sometimes the show can be boring so I go into my head and something there will make me laugh. The funny thing about this to me is I either get blank stares or other people will laugh along with me even though what is on tv may not be funny. Laughter is a lot more social than we give it credit.
