.....and all along I thought fasting is for self-control and spiritual discipline. Why the weighing?

Oah great. Because I ate some figs this morning thinking I wasn't going to do it, but now you may have changed my mind since I am allowed to take a break for a few days. So, if I started on the 2nd... how many more days would I do to finish it?

Do you mean 9/2? Or the 2nd day of Eid?
9/2 is fine. If it is the 2nd day of Eid.. Muslims cannot fast on Eid.

There is no time limit, per se. But since you're on a roll you might as well finish them all while you're body's still used to it.

Attempt to rationalize religious practices. People would like to believe that there is a reason they are doing things (and some people are just doing it because of social pressure and would really like some additional motivation to make themselves feel better about giving in)

No. I generally tell them not to ask me that annoying question. Otherwise, if I have a rapport with someone, I say I have no religion (atheist) but find the topic interesting.

Ah.
Able Muslims are required to fast for the whole month of Ramadan. Missed days have to be made up for. So if you wish to fast as we do, you would have to fast for an additional 2 weeks. I myself missed 5 days (first time in my life) because of travel and illness and look forward to making up for them.
However, the fact that you stuck with this so long is a feat in itself.

I'm still on the fence with the issue. Last Ramadan I did about a week of no food, but drank water, this time I did two weeks even without water. Maybe Ill do the whole thing next time if I don't make up the two weeks. It might be agonizing to make up the two weeks while everyone around me is chowing down.

In a way, it is actually better than everyone fasting because it entails more self-discipline. I have fasted in the US for the past 8 years, and it has a more rewarding feel because no one knows I am fasting.

My concern has been more along the lines that peopole would notice I'm fasting and make a spectacle out of it. I hate the attention. But you make a point there that nobody has to know. The downside would be someone making a "discovery" under such circumstances makes it even more spectacular. I'm an extremely discreet person by nature, and I already make quite a roadshow everywhere I go being an american speaking the language as well as I do.
