my father/brother drive the exact same way when they're driving the Audi as when they're driving the old, battered Honda Civic as when they're driving a Mercedes.

I think it's more that tons of people do this, and, with Audis standing out more to you than the average car you see, your brain made an association that doesn't necessarily hold up in reality.

i also think this is the case. i have a friend who was very successful by the early 30's. she's awesome. she purchased a 3-series BMW. but she could only stand having it for a couple of months because she noticed people staring at her longer and she felt slightly threatened by the way men looked at her at red lights/stops (because she was a single woman driving alone back then, easy target for criminals). so she traded in for a Honda Fit and the staring stopped.

although at one point of my life i did live in a former military dictatorship, and i always had this strange feeling that the military drivers in military-plated cars were arrogant. i almost swore they were. idk. one type of car i DO actively avoid are CD-plated car (including UN ones). hm... something about immunity turns people into jackasses. not all corps diplomatique drivers (whether they're actual corps diplomatique or local drivers employed by people with immunity) are idiotic assholes. but i have seen the craziest shit done by CD-plated divers (taking random u-turns, driving in the wrong direction in a double-laned one-way road, general recklessness). i try not to drive too close to them. luxury cars, however, meh.

My brother insists that there such thing as a "small car mentality", which offends me because I drive a Toyota hatchback. He says when the traffic gets bad during rush hour, small car drivers get annoying. WTF?

My mom drives and Audi and the stereotypes the OP mentioned are inaccurate based on my experience driving with her.
