How does this make you feel? What does it make you think about an individual's place in society?

Edit:
I enjoyed this clip.

Cool clip. I'd never seen that. It made me feel a little sad, knowing how things turned out (WWII etc) but overall I think it strengthened my resolve to stand up for what I believe in and to resist tyranny. An individual's role in society cannot be simply defined. I do believe each person has obligations beyond self-interest.

I also enjoyed the clip. The globe dance was also a good lead up clip to the speech.

Thematically, and I suppose also for building the tone.

I was hoping it would be that clip. Haven't seen it in a year or so. I think more people should see it. It makes me feel more responsible for my place in the world.

Bah. Motherhood-Jesus-apple pie. Stop pretending to care.

Or if you think you're not, give up all you have right now and see how hard you scrabble to get it back.

Have you?

I'm guessing, from your cynicism--which usually comes from a fear of failure--that you prefer stability over losing everything. If you agree, then I agree as well. But if you disagree, I'll tell you now: you can't have empathy without the ability to imagine another person's pain.

I can ask you to care more, which I think is better than telling you to not care at all--but you likely do care. You're just too fussed up.

I don't know your personal life, and you don't know what I do in mine; so the most you and I can judge each other for is our intent.

Liked it. It's good to be reminded of what we should be doing once in a while.

I've been placed in what seemed to me at the time to be a starvation situation. My selfishness, once I was able to get food, shocked me. It's a good education on the subject of the meaning of really 'caring'. The situation in question was transitioning from an American to a rural African diet.

I couldn't really parse that. I'm realistic about my desire to live. I can imagine another person's pain as well as anyone, or possibly better than many. That is a far cry from actually doing anything about it, considering what it already takes to live my own life, and support my nearest and dearest. If I care, but won't do anything, then I call that fake caring.

I have no idea what you mean by fussed up. Why would I be fussed up? Is this a demonstration of your empathy? As for caring, I target it at my immediate circle, where it's not just bullshit.

Early 20's this was the goal. Mid to late 20's the realism of humanity kicks in.

You may not be able to change the world, but you most certainly can do your part to make life better for the people who enter yours, even if it's just by a little bit.

What brought you to Africa? Was it a choice of privilege?

Like I said, you don't know what I do in my personal life, and I don't know much about yours--the most we can have at the moment is a philosophical discussion.

The clip is an expression of an ideal. We may never attain ideals but they make up the guide stones of our society.

There are worse ideals to have than those expressed in the clip.

The road to wisdom is not paved by platitudes though.

Nice video.

How idealistic. Human "flaws" such as greed isn't' the problem at all; life itself is a savage beast. War, murder, rape, corruption and other such things are simply a facet of life's own cannibalistic nature. Peace, love, tolerance, and understanding are hollow ideals in the face of the time-bomb coded in our DNA. If you want to be free of the savage nature of life itself, you'd best find a way to completely rewrite the human genome.
