Yes, YouTube is a great way to discover new music, and it's a great way to watch music videos, but the quality really does leave a lot to be desired for everyday listening.

Some people just aren't that picky. If they're comfortable with it, who's to tell them otherwise?

I haven't bought music in such a long time. I listen to the radio and play the CDs I already have. I need my money for other activities.

The sound quality on YouTube is awful! If you really don't believe you can tell the difference, try this little experiment: find a CD of a song or (better) an album you particularly like, preferably one with real instruments, vocals and a reasonably prominent drum line. Also find a fairly decent set of speakers, and listen to this album at least once every day, preferably more, for at least a week (longer is better). Then go back and listen to some songs from that album on YouTube, ideally through the same speakers, and see whether you think it sounds as good as the original.

I'm sure you're right, but it doesn't bother me-I would probably notice the difference if I were directly comparing a high-quality mp3 or lossless file and youtube, but if I'm just listening to youtube I can't tell the difference. I don't think my speakers are nice enough to really take advantage of higher quality sound either.

I've amassed a huge collection of albums by illegally downloading over the years, mainly V0 or better mp3s and FLAC.

If I'm buying music, chances are it's vinyl.

I always buy music online, since 90% of my music cannot be found in brick-and-mortar stores and 90% of that that can is generally hard to find in the US. Beatport.com is where I go for nearly all of my music, though I have one or two other stores that sometimes have things Beatport doesn't.

All the music I've ever purchased would fit in a shoebox, always just listened to the radio and if I really liked something I taped it. Occasionally received a tape or CD as a gift.

Maybe the RIAA should do something about radio stations giving all that product away...

My music collection is both in the physical compact disc format and in a variety of digital formats as I buy albums in both, depending which is quicker to get your hands on. How the music is stored is not much of a concern as long as I enjoy the content.

It depends on my time frame. If I want it NOW for some reason, I'll buy it as a DRM free MP3 download. If it can wait a bit, I buy the CD or vinyl. I never buy proprietary formats. I buy direct from the artist whenever I can.

I almost always buy an album at a time because it gives a better flavor of the artist and my favorites cuts change over time; usually a particular cut interests me, but i listen to the CD over and over and over, and others become more interesting. It usually takes me at least 3-4 listens to even begin to hear what the artist is doing.

(Some people are answering the OP's question as tho he asked how we acquire music, not how we buy it. I acquire music lots of other ways, too, and since I began acquiring music in ways other than passively listening to it on the radio, my purchasing volume has gone way up....)

It depends. I usually just download singles that I like but I also sometimes buy normal cd albums when I like the artist.

Pandora anyone?

I used to download tons of music, but now that my Pandora stations are so personalized, I just let that run.

I buy CDs from Ebay or the artist, or I will buy FLAC/wav albums from the few places that sell those. I refuse to have MP3 unless there is absolutely no choice (as is the case for obscure vinyl-only releases that have been posted online).
