Hello. I've been lurking on these forums for some time now, and decided it would be an interesting place for discussion.

I'm 23 years old, from Central Pennsylvania, USA, and a pre-medical student.

I find that the MBTI and the like are pretty interesting, and very descriptive of me. Though, I can't for sure say that it isn't sorcery or woo of some kind.

I do have a few hobbies. On my nerdy side I play shogi, chess, go, and do sudoku puzzles. On the other hand, I play rugby, hockey, and the game of drink.

Anyway, enough about me. I'm fixing for some intense discussion and debate. Cheers!

Welcome RPizzle!

When you complete your studies I will be pleased to talk shop with you if you are up for it. However, being married to a fellow Physician it can be overload sometimes.

I find sudoku interesting as well.

This is actually a very tough question for me. Coming from a fire and EMS background, I have a natural inclination towards emergency medicine. I do sometimes imagine going into cardiology...maybe I have an unnatural attraction to EKGs. Then again, if I do really well in med school, I'd be a fool to pass up derm or ophthalmology. I'm also debating on timing an MPH before, during, or after this rather long adventure.

Okay, so I guess that wasn't terribly clear on my future specialty. I will not go into peds. That's one ruled out at least. Also, surgical specialties seem to have horrific work weeks. This really is my current level of decisiveness.

What I really want to do though, regardless of specialty is join the US Public Health Service. I feel that it would be the best way to shape health policy in this country. Who knows, there is always that shot at becoming surgeon general...if one plays the game masterfully.

To Katiya: I'd really enjoy that. I will see you in 4 years! Don't forget.

Welcome to the Forum.

I taught at Penn State back in 1981 and 1982... but that was in the Computer Science Department. I haven't been back in the last couple of years, though.

How do you handle the garden lint problem?

Thanks for the welcome!

I'm actually transferring to Penn State from Juniata College. From what I hear a Juniata degree is great and all in-state, but applying to medical schools everywhere, you want a degree from PSU plain and simple. Also, even if it takes me an extra year, PSU has much better abroad programs. I've always wanted to go to Japan, and I figure now is the time to explore.

Edit: I just saw your 25' telescope in another thread. That looks amazing. My interest has just very recently peaked in astronomy. I think it's a mix between watching Carl Sagan's Cosmos, and seeing an article about the $15 Galileoscopes on Dawkin's forum. I'm actually excited to see the rings of Saturn and the Pleiades. It's only going to be a 50x acromat lens, but its a start!
