it's not considered a racist city no part of washington is. I can't imagine anyone harrassing you for out of state plates.

Bobert, your kids are intelligent. they will adapt. i did...it was a little tough in some cases, but, nonetheless, smart kids who are reasonably tough can do it. everyone is more flexible than they think they are...
the only place i have been harassed for out of state plates was wyoming...and i had a good rifle on me at the time.....i fit right in. |

I lived in the deep south with "northern" plates. The war is still going on down there. Animal/pest situation. I like to garden. Animals grazing through it is a problem. Is there a heavy mosquito problem? |

I'm originally from Washington - (the Seattle area) - and one thing I miss is the lack of pests. Spokane seems to me like it'd be a fine place to raise kids - a relatively quiet little city in the agricultural part of the state. Very much like Idaho, if that means anything to you. The countryside can be very beautiful... they might have the occasional rattlesnake, out in the countryside... not sure. I know they do a little further south- but not like they do in the Southwest. But Washington does not have pests like back East or the South, bug-wise.
It's always seemed pretty boring to me, but that might be the lack of water, I prefer to be near water. They definitely have lawns - they're just brown for a lot of the year. Washington State is a great place to grow up, sociologically speaking, in my experience. I've been to other parts of the country as an adult and have been surprised at the lingering historical tensions - racial and otherwise. I'd always thought of them as historical, anyway; stuff I'd only read about in books as a kid. I never saw much of that kind of thing growing up... though I'll grant you that I was a middle class white girl in the burbs, I always thought of it as a NW thing, too. What's that old quote about the West Coast - something about someone turning the country on end so all the loose people tumbled on over there. WA & OR have a lot of quirk to them. Eastern Washington is definitely more conservative, culturally, than the other side of the Cascades, but it's still the PNW, which is a good thing, in my book. I'll also say, WA is a fun state to explore with kids, if you're into road trips. Lots of camping and a variety of landscapes and odd little towns to visit. |

Standard of Living is much higher in Spokane than Pittsburgh. My initial results were incorrect.
I think, that to justify moving to such a degree (distance, esp. income vs standard of living, and for me another f@ckin move), that her income would have to more than double (slightly) to be compared to a raise with promotion. But with a college called Gonzaga U...

The list of pros and cons might help and if you have ever sat together and done vision casting for your family that would help too, to create some clear goals that you can hold this opportunity against.
The only 2 things I can add without more info from you is: If her job is not in a bullet-proof industry (like the medical industry) I would add that being the new employee might put her in a more vulnerable position if there are layoffs. And if they are not paying relocation fees, this can really get expensive. How long do you have to decide? We will go with you where ever you go! I keep forgetting to edit my OP, it's an 80% raise.
Spokane has 9% sales tax, but can be thwarted by going to Idaho or Oregon. |

Well, you'd lose any tax savings with the cost of gas on the long drive to Oregon, but doing large purchases in Idaho is certainly a viable option. You might still want to have your residence in Washington, though, as there's no state income tax.
