Tell me what robot you like, and I tell you who you are...

In the main, volunteers tended to prefer the Humanoid robot. So, if you went for him consider yourself normal. But the researchers also discovered that "introverts and participants with lower emotional stability" showed a slightly higher preference for the two more mechanical robots. That's not to say they preferred the other two outright, just that they warmed to them slightly more.

[...]

The researchers suggest that perhaps introverts, or "those who score low on emotional stability", were receptive to less humanoid robots because they get more stressed by normal social interaction.

How can you get stressed by interacting with a machine regardless of its humanoid demeanor (not taking poorly designed workflows into account)?

I'd rather interact with a machine that is recognizable as such than with a humanoid robot.

What about you?

I dislike uncanny valley or 'humanoid, but not humanoid enough' robots. I could totally hang with R2D2, C-3PO...eh. I think it'd be most amazing if you could infuse great AI that interacts with and emulates human emotion into a non-humanoid form. It's the AI, not necessarily the mechanical construct of the robot that I love. So cool.

Preference is for the one on the far left, since it's neither kitchy or creepy looking. Not an introvert.

Second robot is duct tapey and its head looks like a CD tower cover but it doesn't go over the top enough into flat-out trashy.

Third robot looks a bit too "I have now requested you to oil my joints three times" and also, arm socket looks treacherous. Bicep slash while hugging.

First robot is best.

Out of those three, I'd absolutley pick the first one. The other two look totally creepy. Also, I don't want a robot that talks to me, yeesh. I also don't want Siri. :D

What I really want though, is this thing:

"that research has shown how mechanical rescue robots can seem creepy to people who are trapped beneath rubble, when they come to their rescue".

Really, you're trapped under a ton of rubble and your main concern is the aesthetics of your rescuer?

Yeah, I don't want to be rescued by a metal box on wheels, just leave me here to rot. What would be funny would be a perfectly life like humanoid robot but he/she is only 4 inches tall - *squeaks* "I've come to rescue you".

Extra Credits did a segment on this. There's a threshold where things become too human-like and it is just creepy. Most things stay well below that threshold, so we clearly know we are not speaking to a human (like the guys from the Will Smith I, Robot movie). Then there's the creepy things the japanese are making.

Notice how people who are unreadable through a lack of facial and body language cues, tend to freak people out? Looking human and communicating like a human being with all the appropriate cues are two different things.

(probably depends on where they got caught). Technically, robots aren't exactly dolls... and some machines do seem to have a will of their own anyway

Do female (-looking) robots need a lobby? (That's probably a question for the Ethics subforum.)

I once read a story about a guy who fell in love with a sentient robot. It really made sense to me, as the robogirl would be far more like the way us NTs think, that most humans. I'd probably choose that option. Much easier than dating.

Edit: Does that make me sad, lonely, weird, or all of the above?

Do I even care?

I like the one on the left. That's because I score low on emotional stability.

It also reminds me most of Wall-e even though it doesn't look human.

I voted "yay robots". I'd love to have one around me, taking care of little chores, playing chess with me and teaching me things that I don't know. I'd prefer less-human appearance. If I wanted to have another human being around me all the time, I think I'd choose the real thing, not just a robot.

The first one looks like a treadmill with a webcam on it. Deeply unsettling. The second one looks like it's in the process of being repaired. I will be the first person in the thread to go with the majority and prefer the one with a face... though mostly because it looks finished. It's not just the face, the rest of it has also had some nice metal plates added. I don't like machines with their guts hanging out and wires everywhere.

I voted appearance doesn't matter, because even though appearance totally does matter I don't care if a machine looks humanoid. I just want it to look functional and tidy.

The overall physique is highly masculine and his intellectual capabilities are for me to program as I like, after all robots are highly programmable.

We are, but there are not many mind-mates that meet our requirements.
Maybe I'll clone him with my brain and a bit more... again programmable is the key here. My wishes will be his commands.

Robots maybe programmable, but so far intelligence is not ... you'd win the nobel prize for it. (I bet you're secretly working on something, admit it!

Humanoid robots scare the bejeezus out of me ever since I saw The Terminator as a kid. I just don't trust a robot who has human hands. Such a robot can hold guns, kitchen knives and my neck. They look awesome, but I wouldn't want one.

I would want something like this though:

I wouldn't choose any of the three. I'm like Lilie in that I'd like for it to look "finished." All of these are obviously one-offs so it's fine for what they are. If it were a production run I would hope some thought would be put into the design.

I have noticed this trend in popular culture to depict robots as humans, behave like humans, replace human relations, and I don't think this is a healthy developement. Robots can hazardous, repetitive, boring work just fine, and probably also a lot of household work can be done but making it look like a human, evoking our instincts and feelings to treat it like a human, this is bound to cause disaster.
