Ants alone? They are so small, they would probably be annoying like eating sunflower seeds, bake em in a cookie or something.

Ants in South America are rather large. I've heard of them being dipped in caramel.

Thanks!

Wow, spiders really have a shitload of protein (on assumption that the values are true). I wonder what it tastes like.

Most insects suffer if they are too fat -- as a result, most of them are incredibly lean and great sources of protein.

Yuk.... Well if I had no food and there were no green leaves or other type of food around, I supposed I would try. But since there are plenty of food choices around and plenty of trees, then I'll have to say. Thanks but no thanks, I pass.

So does my hair. I tried eating some of that once and it tasted awful so I'll pass up on the insects.

I would definetly eat bugs if they where more widely available. Not sinew or large chunk of fat. Easy to fry, healthy and quite tasty.

Why the hell can't I get my insect at the grocery store ?

General grocery stores appeal to the masses. I can't even get my frozen pierogi or miso there.

Doesn't walmart stock the original Mrs T's pierogies? What they really need to catch up on is loading up on scrapple and shoo-fly pies!

I prefer meat, thanks. The texture of bugs would just make me throw up. They're either chitinous or squishy, no?

I hear many crusaders preach about how eating bugs is necessary to maintain our growing population; me, I think we should just fuck less or use protection when we do. Those of us who don't want to eat bugs really shouldn't have to.

I just checked Mrs. T's website and I don't think they sell in Canada. I've never even heard of scrapple and shoofly pie. My next visit to the U.S. will be Pennsylvania.

When I go to visit family in Sardinia and we have a big family dinner, at one point a big plate of these guys comes out:

These are simply cooked in a pan and then you take the slimy snails out with a toothpick

and put a little salt on and wa-là! xD ..They taste kind of like salted chewing gum!!

But sometimes they make them in sauce :

So I don't find it strange you eat grasshoppers, but I don't know if I'd actually eat them.

I don't see what's eating bugs got to do with evolutionary leaps. I don't see the gain from a metabolic point of view.

100 grams of large grasshoppers have:
3.3 g fat
14.3 g protein
20% daily value of Iron

Ok, you had already answered the nutrition question.

I guess I could get used to eating grasshoppers. It's probably just a mental thing.

Mmmm. Snails, totally forgot that they would be counited as "bugs". They are very common in Spain and Morocco, I like sipping on the hot broth that they cook them in. I recognize the shells on the bottom more than those on the top, are those the kind that they eat in Sardinia?

Unfortunately it seems that the relationship to shrimp is more than superficial -- the blasted things seem to have the same protein that's implicated in shellfish allergies, which I have got.

Good thing I found that out before I started the cricket farm...

What? Here in the American midwest I can get several varieties of both miso and pierogi, along with any animal and fish part you can imagine. And am only a short boat-ride from Canada.

The top ones are called "Monachelle" and they are a variety of smaller snails. They are usually just "roasted" in a hot pan(right now I can't remember if you need to add some oil or something, but I think not.) And then you just eat them with salt. One of my cousins and my brother eat them as if they were popcorn!! lol
The second are prepared in tomato and herb sauce. They also make them in the oven with breadcrumbs and garlic. I don't particularly love snails actually. I've learned to eat them so that I could get used to the taste... because it was really frustrating to see everyone else enjoy them and eat tones!

Another thing they have in Sardinia, that you might like, is called Cazu Marzu. It's cheese with special maggots:

Can you see those little white worms on the plate? When you cut the cheese they jump around! It's amusing...but it's just too much for me. I never tried it. I just couldn't impose it to myself.

Casu marzu is considered to be unsafe to eat by Sardinian aficionados when the maggots in the cheese have died. Because of this, only cheese in which the maggots are still alive is usually eaten, although allowances are made for cheese that has been refrigerated, which can kill the maggots.

Nope. Ain't gonna. Love cheese. Willing to eat bugs. But not this.

I've eaten cricket, tasted like crab or prawn. Not terribly surprising, but good to confirm that in the end a meaty arthropod is a meaty arthropod.

Cooked and prepared like other arthropods, sure I can eat bugs. ^_^

I once tasted a live cockroach. Wasn't intentional. Didn't like it.

Put this on your resume, please. At the very bottom, just as you have written it above.

I adore shrimp, crab, and lobster. Those are already all arthropods, or as I like to call them, the insects of the sea.

So in a way, I already do eat insects. Frequently.

I would try insects just to see if they were any good. It might be a bit weird at first and I dunno if I could get past the ick factor, but I would try them. I'll try any food once.

I could and would (prob just for the experience). If they taste good and there aren't any weird consistencies (like tripe, for instance, I won't eat that). I love shellfish.

---------- Post added 08-06-2012 at 03:34 PM ----------

I'm not doing maggots. See the item about weird consistencies, above.

Tripe's weird in flavour and texture. Musky rubberish.

Yeah. And that is so not a good combo. Many menudo lovers, however, disagree...
