Well, this is highly unlikely...but are any of you rocking horse makers/know anyone who is?

I need to practice my wood working more but I have done a little.

I know (not very well) a guy who carves wood and is great with wood work in the next town, who I could get advice from.

Also seen this course on basic wood work in general in a local collage.

However I might be getting spinal and heart surgery very soon and I have no definite date and will be unable to work/long recovery so might not enroll for this course for September.

Apprenticeship or a course in woodwork?

A rocking horse maker is in Ireland, but far down South in Kildare, which is too far for me and it seems more...industrial and a brand than the product, even if its hand made in their case.

Well, this sounds like it's something that requires a lot of discerning research.

What you'll need to do is start researching on the net and talking to woodcarvers in your area, to find out if you can apply what you learnas an apprentice or in a course to the art of making rocking horses.

It may be worth it to speak with the rocking horse maker in Ireland, or go for a visit and see if they can at least give you some pointers.

Good luck! What an intriguing conundrum.

My dad made a rocking horse for my kids out of wood, so I guess he is a rocking horse maker. Oh yeah, he made one for my brother and I when we were kids as well. So that's two under his belt.

, they say about Scottish, Welsh, English and Northern Irish, they do not give a full list of the N.Irish people. I sent a message to the guy based in England for more info though

On that note I sent a quick email to the carvers down in Kildare as well.

Looking in my county, seems to be no wood carvers in my area.
However I was at a friends stall at market and a old guy (from the next town) carves wooden art, and I talked to him for awhile, I could keep and eye out for him as he does not exist online it seems.

My boss does a little wood work himself, but its making frames for the paintings and little tables which are basically very "tree" based (natural look, like circles off trunks.).
I will ask him on Friday for advice, he should know some carvers too.

This will certainly take years and years of work, and I might not be able to start this year even learning basic wood work, but will spend my time researching.

Talking to my boss, he knows a Lady in Sligo who makes them and some guy further away who are not listed online.
He stressed how hard it was, but said he will arrange us to meet some time and for me to give it a go anyway.
