Just about everybody will drop a line from The Big Lebowski or something, if the situation reminds them of it. But me, I'm different.

I would estimate that nearly half of the sentences I use in a given day are recycled lines I heard somewhere else. I can name the source of most of these. They come from movies, song lyrics, things I heard friends and family say that hit me as profound or funny... memes, basically.

Some examples:

When I say "Thank you", I don't just say thank you. I say it like the robotic garbage can that they used to have at Taco Bells back in the day

I say "Good luck" like the guy from the movie Taken starring Liam Neeson

I often tell people they are "talking apples and oranges", which a mechanic once said at my old teenage gas jockey job. I also grabbed, "Isn't that the way of things?" from the same guy

I have only met one person that does this as regularly as I do, an online friend. Of course this leads to us responding to each others' posts in ways that would not normally follow the course of regular conversations.

That's my daughter to a T. Anything from Hamlet to Top Gear to Spike Jones might come up. We never know.

My best friend (ESTJ) and her husband (ENFP) carry on entire conversations that are nothing but quotes from movies.

But no, I don't do it myself.

Although there is a mostly internal form of communication among my immediate family members, but as the family memes don't make much sense to anyone but a few of our closest friends, we keep them inside the house.

Our latest addition is this week when my son went to ask dad something about dinner and by the time he got upstairs he forgot what he was going to ask, so it came out:

Son: Would you like some STUFF on your THING?

Dad: <puzzled> Yes, yes I would. Always. Except when I don't.

I have a feeling this will become a permanent part of the family repertoire.

I steal lines from Kisai and try to pass them off as my own, because people actually care about what I say.

I'm intimately familiar with the source material, and it would be hard to draw that conclusion.

It would actually seem more likely that he was referencing Futurama where Fry famously remarks, "did everything just taste purple?"

As Chappelle's bit would not apply to food, nor would it really apply to a general phenomenon of deliciousness.

Your friend is being purposefully obscurantist to the point that for anyone to "Get it" they would have to just be haphazardly guessing.

I do this with my ENTP husband, and we both do it with our parents as well. Each family has quotes as old as ten years- maybe some are older. They can be quotes from movies, songs, or a funny thing someone said once. Years ago my mother in law absentmindedly told my husband's friend to "put the dirty ladle in the couch" when she meant dishwasher. Now after a meal, it is traditional to start cleaning up by saying "Time to put the ladles in the couch."

Conversation I just had this morning with the ENTP when discussing a frustrating problem at our workplace:

ENTP: I don't want to live on this planet anymore. [Futurama]
Me: Misplaced the Ambien. [Song quote, Frontalot's "First World Problems"]
ENTP: Why's it gotta be this way? [Quote from a random deckhand on The Deadliest Catch, TV show that aired in 2008ish]
Me, seeing latest crazy email in the frustration chain: What's wrong with their faaaace?! [Phantom Menace movie review, Plinkett]

Like any inside joke, it provides immediate connection. It reminds us of shared experiences and helps to convey emotion. And who doesn't enjoy having a semi-secret nonsense language?

I actually do this as much as possible in normal conversation, I find it immensely hilarious, especially when other do not know the meme but laugh along anyway. Its my way being of "being socially connected" in a sense... I guess.

Not only do I steal lines...my entire persona at any given time is basically just me stealing, and amalgamating a variety of tones/ways of speaking/linguistic phrases etc... that I pick up via proximity to people.

I sort of suspect that this is what everyone does, but maybe they are less aware of it than I am...idk though.

I'll do this, when I expect that the person will get the reference. So I'll say it ironically.

However, generally, I'll be more likely to copy phrases that others said, that I liked. Like, that someone said "Wow!" and people like it. So I said "Wow!" all the time, for a few months.

we live in a world of appropriation, where culture is endlessly recycled to give itself meaning in the absence of original living... perhaps stealing is a harsh word in the presence of memetics.

I use a lot of stuff from other people. Since I don't watch TV, most of my material comes from books and articles that I have read. This makes my plagiarism much less apparent to the average listener. So, if I read (or hear) something that I like or find useful, I just "file the serial number off and claim it as my own". I prefer to be inventive and say things in new ways. I hate memes and similar stuff, but I will use them from time to time just to show that I can. Complete lines, though? Pretty sure I don't do that kind of stuff, other than perhaps accidentally. After all, I got pretty much all my knowledge of vocabulary and sentence structure from others..

As far as TV/Movies go, I've noticed I've said the following lines frequently:

"That's the curse of the Time Lords" (Dr.Who)
"What a nauseating concept." (Witness for the Prosecution)
"Don't speak. You lower the IQ of everyone on the street." (Sherlock)
"After all, tomorrow is another day!" (Gone with the Wind)

etc, etc, etc.

Do any of you imitate characters from your favorite shows?
I watched Lie to Me when it was on and I remember I loved Dr.Cal Lightman so much, I actually started to act like him to a degree. I thought he was just brilliant xD

I use lines when they seem apt and/or if I think the person I'm talking to might 'get it'. Sometimes they do and are pleasantly surprised. Obscure references are fun to bring up in conversation.
