I'm at a summer program where we're housed in really crappy dorms with thin walls. I'm a light sleeper, and the political discussion happening in the next room sounds like the participants are arguing over my head. I need sleep badly; has anyone else dealt with this and achieved any degree of success?

I am a light sleeper and I live on the the busiest road in Fresno, two blocks from a seven story hospital, with downstairs neighbors that love to party to 2 or 3 am. When I first moved in, I found it was hard to fall asleep. The shitty part is that it did take awhile to get used to it but like anything you adjust. If you have a fan or something, turn it on to create some white noise.
If you have sleeping pills and believe in taking them, then use them but I think you would have tried that before coming on here and asking. |

Sleeping pills and white noise are your friend. I got so tired of college life that I graduated.

Earplugs are your friends. You could also bribe/trade with the loud people in exchange for quiet during a certain time; generally beer or drugs are good for this, or if they're so into politics, you could sign their petitions or attend their rallies. If all else fails, drug THEM with the sleeping pills. Using superior intelligence, a little imagination, and if necessary a thorough repression of your conscience, I'm sure you can figure out how to solve this problem to your satisfaction. Good luck!

Eat some food, go explore your college with a sleeping bag and find some place to sleep quietly. Like a supply closet or some other off-limits area.

I feel for ya: I used to really suffer in the college dorms from the incessant all-nite noise of various stripes.
I live near a freeway, and have to use a fan in the hallway (for white noise), earplugs (silicone kind from Walgreen's---you can shape them and adjust their size to suit your ears), pillow over my head. (I also have insomnia, so I take a bunch of natural sleep supplements.) |

Fuck the pain awayyy!
Hmm, maybe go next door --> +1 their bitch asses with deep philosophical insight --> they are sent into deep introspective comatose states as they experience a catalyzed existential crisis. |

I like how everyone is suggesting drugs rather than just tapping on their door and asking them to keep it down.
I had a neighbour in residence who played his music loud enough to knock the posters off my walls. All I had to do was let him know what was going on and he stopped. Magical. |

i cant sleep without a fan. i hate all those new ones that are silent...i want mine to make as much noise as possible! ill even turn it on in the middle of winter and wear sweats to bed if i need to. its next to impossible for me to sleep without it.
asking the people to keep it down isnt a bad idea either...as long as they dont already hate you. if they do theyll probably just make more noise to piss you off. if youre staying in the dorms theres usually quiet hours, so if its bothering you enough you can talk to an RA about it. the RA will go tell them to quiet down and theyll get in actual trouble if they dont, as opposed to hearing it from you who has no authority. then you also get to avoid dealing with them directly, which i know i would want to avoid. |

I recommend sleeping pills, zopiclone in particular. They are non-addicting and tolerance does not develop. I used them in my last year of university and I wish I used them for the previous years. I woke up each morning ready to go. My mind got the rest it deserved. My marks actually improved too!

When there's lots of external noise keeping me awake, I put head phones on and choose something repetitive and soothing to listen to - it usually works.

I quit. After two and 1/2 miserable stints.

Having a fan near helps drown out a lot of noise. Otherwise next semester take later classes like me. I stay up late because I start class late and still have enough time for sleep. Usually around midnight the dorms quiet down. |

If only we had some sort of soft foam-rubber things you could insert into your ears to block out noise.

Ear plugs.
Or you could go over there and argue them into submission, or learn a thing or two. |

I use earplugs when I'm sleeping. If my neighbors are being loud in the middle of the night, I go to their room and ask them to be quiet. If noise is still a problem, talk to your RA/supervisor about the noise, there should be rules that forbid you from being loud in the middle of the night.

Ask to change to a different room. Since it's a summer program there are probably a lot of other rooms free.
Yeah, you can ask them to keep it down but I've never had good luck with that. They get quieter for sure, but still not quiet enough for me. Loud people are loud. |

Going round there and telling them to shut the fuck up would be a good start. When you live in halls/dorms, you have to expect it to be excessively noisy, so it's a case of either doing something about it, or joining in.

Earphones. If you have iOS, get a sleeping app. Sleepstream works quite well. Also, just tell them, or an RA. I don't think sleeping pills is the answer, since the OP's problem is not internal or chemical. It's not like the OP is a natural insomniac. Avoid taking pills.
