Common sense.

Advertisers have noticed that more women are attending college than men.

Women are going to better educated and better paid than their male counterparts in the near future.

excellent, that means reduced child support and alimony payments for men!

They seem to be stealthy.

Especially the attractive ones. Some of the most intelligent women I know act and dress like mainstream extroverts. On the surface, you can't tell them apart from any other woman.

Because you don't want to be seen as a liar if you're not smart and want to appear to be. But I suppose you can take your chances.

You aren't making any sense.

I think we women like it because we are constantly pressured by society to be dumb, otherwise men won't like us. Remember 100 years ago when most men thought that politics was just so above the puny brain of a woman that they couldn't even be exposed to the topic or their poor little heads would explode or make silly conclusions? Yeah, we may have moved on from that, but not far enough yet. Girls today are still pressured into not being too smart, because that will scare away boys.

Imagine how ridiculous a "Why is there a push for people to be perceived as smart" thread would be.

Jesus.

Jesus Almighty.

Actually its more like "Why is there a push to see men as dumb and women as smart".

... probably to make women feel better and attempt to empower them more.

The greater number of educated unfortunately doesn't mean 'educated in useful fields'. Without that, the education just tends to be unnecessary debt, and of not much use to the society.

I have a theory that that's just a side-effect of being prettier. You put in less effort because you can. You form habits that make life easier for you. And if you don't need to really develop your brain power - you won't.

Also, men don't necessarily like stupid girls. Argumentative and critical is a very different thing... However, it takes courage to speak your mind and court conflict or ridicule, and really... why bother forming habits like that when you're getting appreciated anyway.

Nevertheless, that is the other side of that trend. Men being shown is exceptionally stupid or weak. Girl power all the way. You even see it in cartoons lately.
Avatar The Last Airbender was a very popular cartoon lately. Look at the boys and girls in that, and also in the sequel. The main character and male lead in the first one was a total goof. The main character and female lead in the second one is more of a powerful physical type.

Honestly though anyone under oppression (no matter the level) are just that, oppressed. I find these commercials are infact doing that to women; the opposite of what they say.

*looks over shoulder*
'oh, hello, honey.'
Wife says, ' what was that you just wrote?'
'Nothing, I love you.'

That's not true. No one said "smarter by comparison". It's not taking from one and giving to the other.

Nothing.

I perceive a person as "smart" if said subject displays worthy intelligence. Having a penis or a vagina does not matter. Commercials are marketing - it's a ploy, a gimmick - designed only to get sticky fingers inside your wallet. If it'll separate a woman from her money, the salesmen of this world will happily attach faux intelligence to the use of certain products or items to sell them.

Exactly, I've seen plenty of men who like to show off their intelligence to "get girls". I've always thought of it as very insecure, and advertising prey on insecurities.

What I also found very interesting, is that my family in Italy kept telling me that being callidus in the end is a heck of a lot better than being intelligent, and they put it in very vulgar words. I always thought of if as it being cultural folklore, or a low blow for me since I was the only one to graduate high school and go to college in their side of the family... And it was the women in my family that kept saying that, more than the men.

Because women grow increasingly tired at being labelled unintelligent, and some clever person in marketing decided to play off that.

Maybe advertisers finally figured out that if you want to sell something to someone, it's probably better if you don't start off by insulting them.

Yeah, there's a tough concept.

Why wouldn't there be a push for it?

I like smart women and smart men.

Then again, maybe it's because I'm Jewish.

Fuck you, move the hell over. We get space up here too now.

Where does one go to meet a smart woman? There are lots on this forum who reckon they are smart, but I just don't fancy them. Too aggressive and not enough femininity.

Oh yes, intelligence has much to do with submissiveness in women. The more submissive, the more intelligent. Any idea how hypocritical your ass-umptions?

It has everything to do with mothers doing the brunt of the day to day purchases (e.g. paper towels) for the household. If we lived in a magical world where feminism never existed and fathers did the majority of shopping, I'm sure the advertising would try to woo them with flattery, even to the point of depicting women as being bumbling incompetent "Oh shucks, isn't that cute" idiots. Look at the ads that appeal to the male audience, like pickup trucks. "Woah, you're so manly! You might have to pull 2 tones of wood logs through 9ft of mud with your 8 cylinder truck at any moment!"

Stop watching TV and reading popular magazines.

True. I never made the connection. Is it there? Are advertisers portraying men as Homer Simpson to make them appear dumb?

This is an extreme example, but the message is basically, "You're so awesome. You run the family. If it wasn't for you they'd be eating canned alpo out of tupperware. You deserve a beautiful house and the life you want and buy our shit".
