Occasionally, though what I would call darker others may listen to as their everyday music.
And there certainly is darker music than what I can enjoy listening to when not in my happy mood usually.

So I would say, dark? Rarely.

I find that people in general dislike dark music. They need to be comfortable with whatever they're listening to. Needs to be completely safe, like a warm and familiar goddamned blanket.

I like all sorts of music, especially dark.
However I think this falls more within personal taste rather than MBTI type. It varies from person to person.

My favorite bands are Marilyn Manson, Alice in Chains, Nine Inch Nails, Nirvana, Tool, White Zombie, etc.... If those are considered dark, then sure.

yes but not exclusively. I went through a period where all I would listen to was grunge though.

Alice in Chains (love!), Nirvana, Anthrax (not really dark, but not happy either), metallica, megadeth, etc.

now I'm into a lot of house music though, which can be very uplifting or agressive/partying or chill type music

I like mostly rhythmic music; sometimes it is nine inch nails, sometimes boards of canada.

I don't have a preference either way for dark music, though if it is whiny crap I'll be physically unable to get through it.

My current running/jogging album is Nero's "Welcome Reality"
I guess it's dark?

I am finding that I have less tolerance or need for the negative stuff. When I create music it's to move me in some positive fashion.

I get how kids want to rebel, have energy and they want to get into the darker stuff...but as I get older, I want a positive message and feel.

Maybe it had more to do with your friends and circumstances at the time? Or do you still prefer dark themed stuff to anything else?

My influences definitely had a lot to do with my friends and circumstances as far as bands I would listen to, but I think my taste for dark imagery is more personal.

I actually have a pretty eclectic taste in music. Here is an example:

But I guess I would say that I still prefer it. You could even take a band like the Scorpions that aren't really known for being dark, my favorite tracks are generally their darkest material, songs like Polar Nights or Sails of Charon.

I love dark music and anything extreme.

I grew up with metal, and over time, got more & more into complicated, progressive music, but even though my favorite genre is heavy/progressive metal, I like anything from one extreme to the other.

My favorite band has been Dream Theater, which is softer (well their newer music is), but progressive. I love complicated rhythms/style to music.

I can go from listening to Between the Buried & Me

Music to me I feel is personal, and not based on personality types. I enjoy crazy music the most; Maybe I'm crazy.

I am a huge fan of Rush. My very favorite. Of all progressive rock, Rush is by far the most positive and uplifting -- the opposite of dark.

But I also like Porcupine Tree -- very, very dark.

Go figure.

Me!!! Not heavy metal though, I prefer the fusions of gothic, symphonic rock with lots of violins.

For me, dark music only refers to the "sound", and not the "content" of music.
Said that, content, is what really matters to me, that's why I love prog rock bands which offer a lot of content and creativity in their music, regardless of the sound, like King Crimson, Yes, Kaipa, IQ, Camel, etc... Prog is exactly the same as "classical" music, but with different and newer sounds, like JS Bach (I love it too).
You can find amazing patterns, and listen songs over and over understanding one piece of it at the time, always finding something new and interesting.

UGH, no, hate "dark," but do at times enjoy listening to poignant or pensive music (for example, Sibelius' "Swan of Tuonela," or #1 and #2 of the Schindler soundtrack). My favorite composers are Handel, Telemann, Tchaikovsky, Glazunov, Dvorak, Smetana & Lehar.

Also, I appreciate music way more than the lyrics

Ditto: when I used to listen to a lot of pop music as a teen, I couldn't even make out about 99% of the lyrix. And now, I prefer instrumental to vocal any day (esp. can't stand shrieking sopranos or wailing tenors, as in opera).

+1

I have always listened to a variety of music, whatever is good to my ears. I listened to more dark songs in my early-mid teen years but nowadays I mostly listen to non-dark songs because I listen to music to help take my mind off things/not be too serious/make myself feel better, not worse xD. I can still appreciate the dark music however, as their lyrics and melodies are often more complex/sophisticated than most other genres.

Ive been playing acoustic guitar for about a year and a half now, Ive gotten to the point where I write riffs and fingerpicking patterns.... It always comes out very somber and metallica's "one"esque. I was watching the Hatfields and McCoys special on TV not too long ago and wrote something that it made me feel like with all of the drama and killing of family members... needless to say it was a sad, and angry song. Like a man at war.....I would say yes, this is the type that is inside of me. I think it comes from being the "strategist" type and understanding that there are solutions for all of the mayhem in today's world, regardless if I know it or not... others just keep on killing each other and doing stupid shit. So yeah, my outlook is of melancholy....It is my deepest emotion.

---------- Post added 06-21-2012 at 07:08 PM ----------

BTW, I find music to be a GREAT outlet for the frustration that comes with the INTJ personality type.

I have always found music to be more of an escape than an outlet for me, even when I was writing music back when I played in bands and stuff.

Yes, it's like translating emotions (that are often hard to deal with), and also frustration into notes. It seems that it makes everything better when the song suits the situation.

I like instrumental music. I listen to Jazz, Classical, Blues, some Rock bands too.
But i absolutely hate Pop, Country, and Dance music. I like my music to sound dark sometimes, but i surely hate it to sound feel good.
Calm and sad is enough most of the time.

Mostly, but in classical music; overture.
This is one of my preferred. It matchs with the pircture in the video:

When I was a youngster I loved anything that was angry or depressing

Sadly, many people don't understand this, and one has to be careful with who to share it.

In music, here's what I'm looking for:

1. Complexity
2. Lyrics
3. In some cases, I'll fall in love with a song because it's so simplistic and beautiful.

This does not include my workout music, haha, that's another thing entirely.
