When I was a youngster I loved anything that was angry or depressing, LOL. Black Sabbath, Nirvana, GG Allin, Insane Clown Posse, a lot of punk and metal. My small circle of friends and I all had pretty similar personalities, and we all listened to the same stuff.
What about you guys? Were you cranking MANOWAR? |

Personally, introverted (I) idealism (N) focused on strategically revaluating reality (T) toward a goal (J) occasionally meanders into obsessive pursuit requiring background scores and lyrics like:

I like my music dark, yes. Not attention-seeking, thrashing, and unbearably loud. Think Danse Macabre or Rite of Spring.

I liked country as a teen, watched CMT whenever I got the chance. Got into rock in my later teens. Can't stand the really hard shit; it's all just noise to me.

Not at all. I love singer/songwriter music, rock music, and modern folk music.

Not anymore. I listened mostly to black metal in my later teens, though it was the aggression in the music that was the greatest attractor. A lot of the lyrics also had an entertaining intellectual side.

Yes... dark, atmospheric, and dissonant (a la Burzum, Dissection, Agalloch, Blut Aus Nord, Secrets of the Moon, Sol Invictus, or Tenhi, for example). I'm also into some really luminous and uplifting music such as Loreena McKennitt, but it pretty much has to be one or the other, and nothing in between.

I suppose I do now and then, but it seems less dark relative to your picks.

Fantomas
Venetian Snares, Lady Scraper, Datach'i Portal I'd classify that as dark, yeah? |

Mostly yes: from death metal to blues is my most common variety. But I still wouldn't say it's the substance of my music taste. I like good music, and unfortunately most pop songs and the most famous hits usually don't qualify, yet that sort of music tends to be the most not-dark music that I know.

Darker varieties of downtempo and ambient are probably my favorite genres of music. Relaxing but with a deep, slightly sad or ominous atmosphere. Something like

I don't like death metal, metal, etc.
I like songs like Celtic (grew up with it) and Rock (Today's Rock, and Rock from the 70's, 80's, and 90's). I love bands like The Rolling Stones, Guns N' Roses, Queen, and Led Zeppelin. I joke that I was born a few decades late. Celtic in particular allows me to sink into my internal emotions (one of the few times I actually like to acknowledge they exist) and allow me to concentrate and relax, in particular when my mind won't stop its analyzing and processing. |

To me, most death metal has crossed the line between art and noise, but I enjoy many musical genres like classic rock, metal, blues, jazz, and classical. I mostly dislike rap and pop, as well as "noisy" metal like some death and black metal bands.
The only death metal bands I really enjoy are Children of Bodom, Wintersun, Meshuggah, and Revocation. Things like Cannibal Corpse are abrasive to me. That's not because of the lyrics or subject matter, because that doesn't bother me, but if you ever hear vocals from Cannibal Corpse, you'll realize they're un-discernible and painful to the ears. Or at least to me. |

I wouldn't say I like or dislike my songs to be dark. I really like some songs that have a lot of energy and a happy feel, and I also like piano pieces that aren't "dark".
The only music genres I don't care for are metal and country. |

Portishead, Pink Floyd, Radiohead, Metallica, Crystal Castles, Gorillaz, R.E.M., Creedence Clearwater Revival, Arctic Monkeys, INXS, and The Police.
I listen to the Portishead, Floyd, Castles, and Gorillaz the most. Not too dark at all. |

It depends on the immediate mood for me. I don't feel like I ever had a teen angst phase where I blasted punk and metal cause I was pissed at life, but I certainly enjoy it at times (or any other 'dark' type of music).
I'm just as likely to listen to something chill or upbeat, or soundtracks or occasionally jazz/classical. Maybe it had more to do with your friends and circumstances at the time? Or do you still prefer dark themed stuff to anything else? Also, I appreciate music way more than the lyrics, and often I don't even think about the lyrical meaning beyond the surface, which seems to be unusual compared to most people on this forum. |

I love well crafted beautiful melodies. I tend no to understand the lyrics, so I don't dwell on that as much as the music. I'm particular to finger picked guitar in the genre of Chet Atkins and Mark Knopfler.

I like dark music at times... I just like good music but I prefer mellow music personally. Probably because it helps me keep on an even keel. I'll put the darker stuff on before I hit the ice or occasionally while I'm working out.

I like music that is lyrically dark but still melodic and beautiful, like Placebo, Garbage, Tori Amos and Depeche Mode for example. Aggressive and loud music is not my thing, though. I have always liked (and disliked at the same time) the feeling of melancholy and sadness, maybe it has something to do with my music taste.
