Actually, "Pumped Up Kicks" isn't polarizing, which is what is confusing the OP, I think. There has been no backlash whatsoever. Whereas back when I was a teen half the politicians would have needed to install fainting couches in Congress to respond to the song.

I think a lot of people don't even know what the lyrics actually are thanks to the deliberately lo-fi quality of the vocals. I actually didn't realize what it was about for the first few times I heard it and I had to look up the lyrics to make sure it said what I thought it said.

Edit: Also, they're white.

There has most certainly been backlash. Chicago Tribune, for one, went after him. Trust me, or would you like more citations?

I can tell you -- as a newspaper man -- the days where a newspaper can lead a backlash of anything related to pop culture are long over. Nobody cares what the Chicago Tribune thinks about pop music.

Has there been any outcry from the public at large? I really haven't seen anything substantial from news aggregators indicating some sort of trend or anything referenced on television. Not even Fox!

Edit: Just did a quick Google News search to see if there's any recent criticism/attacks on the song and didn't see anything in first three pages.

This is exactly how I interpret the song. It's true that people who commit school shootings or shootings in general think they are doing something right, or at least just. The song is giving us a glimpse into that kind of thought-process.

Right. Who in their right mind would try to make school shootings seem cool?

The point is why pumped up kicks is so polarizing, for better or worse.

To use a tired metaphor: Firemen are always looking for fires to put out.

Would be interested in hearing your old-timers view on it...

I remember a radio show where the interviewer asks Billy Joel about people misunderstanding the meanings of his songs. Although I don’t remember the exact answer it was on the order of: the best songs are the ones where people find their own meanings. I do this all the time; even when I know the “intended” meaning, I still put my own meaning to the song. I think this combined with the fact that shock value has been so over played that for most people it no longer has any effect at all are the main reasons these songs continue to gain popularity. What I got from listening to Pumped Up Kicks was… who doesn’t fantasize about eliminating someone that has crossed a line. That may be clear off of what others hear but when it comes to music I tend to hear what I want to hear and what I want to hear will change with my mood.

The song is too irritating to me to justify listening to or looking up, let alone interpreting the lyrics.

But I shot a man in Reno
Just to watch him die
And when I hear that whistle blowing
I hang my head and cry

Maybe the stupid, pathetic little shit really thinks he "made a difference", hah. He didn't. He just made everyone think it was cool to listen to pop songs about school shootings.

If anything, now it's much more acceptable, since he put a nice veneer over the ugliness of it. Good job.

I bet Jeremy from Pearl Jam really peeves you out.

I appreciate your responding appropriately in my absence.

Ah, those with actual musical taste have mostly abstained from this thread (that ended quite a while ago); a shame.

Ah, yes, the intellectuals of the world must tell us uncivilized plebes what we should like.

p.s. tight pants cause sterility.

Pearl Jam - B+ for musicianship, D- for pretension.

ooh, pooh! A band with lyrics that you don't find to be politically correct!

Any kind of lyrical content involving class warfare is about as politically correct as you can get.

Where did that come from? Men are a class?

OK, I'll address it - that so many women believe that gender politics is a zero-sum game is Exhibit A in the case that democracies enter an inexorable decline when women's suffrage is granted.

The fact that you are a mother of a male child scares me.

If I could I would have child protective services remove your son from you. I cannot imagine how it is safe for a male child to be brought up by someone with such a mindset...

Doesn't it violate some kind of law in regards to abusing children?

I don't know, but it seems very wrong to me.

Why did you even choose to keep a son as opposed to abort him or put him up for adoption, or kill him?...

The fact that you feel correct in criticizing her parenting so harshly based on one sentence scares me.

The inability to recognize sarcasm is just something that you can't take too seriously.
