Do you know your blood type? If so, do you adhere to a blood type diet? Why do most people not know what type of blood they possess?

My blood type is O. I have heard of blood type diets but haven't really tried it out. I think I remember reading that O types are natural born meat eaters and do well on lean meats, fish, and eggs, and don't do too well on vegetarian diets.
I haven't looked into the science behind it at all, and haven't really tried it. I'm actually more of a veggie lover, not a big fan of meat (although not a vegetarian either). I have noticed as well that most people don't know their blood type. I guess it isn't something that comes up in conversation much. The only reason people would need to know it is if they had an accident in which they needed blood, in which case I guess it's usually on record or something. |

I tried looking into the science behind it, and found none. |

I've heard that's a lot of bunk. I've never been one for restricted diets anyway. Eat what you want in moderation, I say.
I have no idea what my blood type is. My doctor told me that blood type tests tend to cost, so they aren't done gratuitously and it's usually if there's a transfusion scheduled, or in circumstances where your blood type must otherwise be known. Which isn't common. |

Do you know your local wild spring greens? If so, do you forage those greens for your food? Why do most people not know what grows in their area? |

I know my blood type, but unless I'm donating blood, recieving a transfusion or getting an organ transplant, I doubt it has any importance in my life.

I work in hematology, and have worked in blood banks.
What people don't understand is that your blood type is FAR more complex than just ABO+/-. There are over 30 known blood groups, with 600 identified variations (types). Most modern blood banks only deal with the 24 that are most likely to cause transfusion reactions (read: kill you). To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts. That's what your blood type really looks like (each row is a different person). I wouldn't expect anyone but an immunohematology specialist (such as myself) to know or understand how they all work. --- If you can't tell from the above chart, blood-type diets are pure bunk. If only because the creative folks who invented them don't quite understand how blood-types work. |

As with all things, there might be some validity to it. However, I think there are too many variations within each blood type to specifically generalize to the extent of diet- not to mention cultural influences and particular tastes and attributes that people have in relation to diet.
I've even read anecdotal information regarding Blood type and Personality; most amusing but likely to be categorized as accurate as horoscopes and birth sign. |

P.S. At least in America, it doesn't matter if you claim to know your blood type. Every hospital will type and screen your blood regardless, because they won't risk a fatal transfusion reaction on your memory or little Red Cross card.

I'm either A- or B-. Know for a fact my sister is an O. Most I've heard is that O types need meat for some weird reason. Never really bothered to research it or care to do so.

Why stick with blood types. There are all sorts of genetic markers that could be used to sell fad diets.

I don't think it's a necessity for meat- but meat has high amounts of zinc, and certain people can be zinc deficient. |

Blood type diets? Forgive me if I laugh out loud. Sometimes bunk is so easy to spot.
I wouldn't use blood type as a determinant of what you should eat. That's like saying: My skin is purple so I should eat marshmellows all the time. |
