Watch the clip in the link and tell me what you think. A fellow site member here recommended I peruse the site the link is to and this came up. Figured it would make an interesting topic.

There is a scene in the movie The Americanization of Emily. This movie stars James Garner as Charlie Madison, an American officer in England during WWII, and Julie Andrews as Emily Barham, a British war widow – also having lost other family members to war.

The scene has Charlie Madison visiting the home of Mrs. Barham, Emily’s mother. Mrs. Barham is in great denial regarding the many deaths that war has brought to her family – her husband and son among others. She still acts as if her husband is alive, and Emily goes along with this denial.

When Mrs. Barham exclaims that after the war, it will be all the generals and statesmen writing books saying how it could have been avoided, Charlie explains that he doesn’t blame the generals and statesmen. He blames the mothers! The mothers make heroes out of their dead sons; they are the first to walk in the parade. Charlie explains that his own mother did this regarding Charlie’s brother. And now Charlie’s youngest brother can’t wait to enlist.

I think its the media or the army more.

Joe died fighting in pointless conflict! Screw the morality of the war hes a hero!

I'd be inclined to choose the president who concisenesouly objected to Vietnam rather than the one who rushed in blindly but hey

^ I agree. Primarily it's the media that we should blame. Additionally the mothers, like everyone else who buys into the media propaganda, also can be blamed.

Sequence of events:

1) Politicians declare war
2) Little Johnny goes and gets killed
3) Mom walks in a parade

Blame the mom!

Sounds like some political think tank is just trying to differ blame, once again. Putting the cart before the horse.

Oh you. The crusades happened to fall in that magical time between when humans were clubbing their mates and when the iPhone was invented.

Speeches, theater, and books are all forms of media. Not as far-reaching, but they influenced the local (religious) leadership, who influenced the masses.

Some examples:

Oh me....

Speeches, theater, and books influenced the masses? It's possible.

...but what influenced speeches, theater, and books?

The individuals who control it. Media nowadays doesn't just come up with shit outta nowhere (I know, it's hard to believe), even if it amounts to nothing but a fucked-up game of operator, someone along the line influenced the message. I'm guessing that with the crusades it was the aforementioned (religious) leadership, but I'm not an expert on that particular slice of life.

If you were being rhetorical, pardon my derp.
