I understand how sugars can affect serotonin but how does it affect things like bipolar and ADHD?

All I know is I've been on a low carb diet for almost a year and now I ate a big christmas meal. I was so drowsy for 90 minutes after I could barely keep myself awake. Damn insulin kicks hard.

I think a low protein diet can cause low serration levels, which can adversely affect mood. And sugar can cause me to be very hyper and moody and bi-polar.

A very brief intro to the Hindu perspective on diet and psychology.....

Sattva
Sattvic foods promote spiritual growth. They nourish the body without taxing the digestive tract. Examples of sattvic foods include ghee, milk, almonds, rice, dates and saffron. Sattvic foods do not stimulate desire or nervous energy. They create clarity instead of drowsiness or heaviness.

Rajas
Rajasic foods stimulate desire or nervous energy. Red meat, high protein food, garlic and onions stimulate desire. Chili peppers, coffee, and cocaine stimulate movement.

Tamas
Tamasic foods create drowsiness, cloudiness, and heaviness. Examples are fermented or putrid foods including alcohol. Beef, prok, garlic, onion also create heaviness.

The only way my diet affects my mood is, if I eat yummy comfort food that I prepare myself, I feel happier

So what's 'yummy' to you ?

For example, I and others elsewhere is cyberspace are purging sugar from the diet.

I've had a change of what I would call 'yummy' and I've read of others who have also experienced a change.

Low carb reliably puts me in a terrible mood. I also lose .5-.75 pounds of fat per day while low carbing.

Which is literally impossible. You're losing water weight at best.

Diet is extremely important and the source of calories is not as important as everything else that comes along with it. Refined sugars are generally bad for your health and mood but other things, like all the precursor substances are important. The vilification of cholesterol is kind of stupid. Your body needs cholesterol to manufacture most hormones and neuroreceptors as well as to repair neurons and form new synaptic connections.

Add to that all the nutrient depleted foods (or nutrient-absent chemical food-like substances) and all those additives are an extra load that your body has to metabolize. Often, your body will sacrifice resources just for the sake of purging toxins.

So what's 'yummy' to you ?

- a lobster dinner
- tofu bourguignon on rice
- a Morroccan couscous made with lamb, chick peas and vegetables
- sole amandine with rice and a salad
- sauerkraut and bratwurst, Dijon mustard and browned potatoes with herbs

This is what comes to mind for now, but there's more. I don't like sweets much, besides black chocolate and the occasional caramel toffee or ice cream, which I'll have at any time of the day and not as a dessert.
