The only thing the two games will have in common will be the lore. In terms of gameplay, it'll be very different, so you will be perfectly fine even if you won't play the first game.

Ah, FFXI! And now XIII is out too. Too bad it's subscription based... I always feel an aversion to spending money on a monthly basis -- in the end, I would pay a 2-3 digit % value of the game more. I know they need the money for updates and stuff like that... But it just HURTS to know that one day you will just throw it away. Or not play for like a week and all that time/money is down the drain. |

I played WoW for ~4 years. I'm still subscribed but only because my SO has a WoW credit card, and he racked up over a year of free subscription time on it for the both of us. I stopped playing a few months ago however.
I've played (in order) Ragnarok Online, Dark Age of Camelot, World of Warcraft and Warhammer Online. For multiplayer games that aren't really RPGs I was a diehard Diablo 2 player, and I play Starcraft 2 from time to time. I'm looking for something new that isn't a total chore to play. I'm becoming disenchanted with the concept of MMO, because I really don't care to deal with total strangers anymore if I can help it. Anything that I can play with a set group of friends is ideal for me. |

Ha, then you should really consider the following games:
* Section 8 -- nice coop last stand mode, only worth it when you catch it on sale * Left 4 Dead 1/2 -- Been playing this for like... 3?4? years... Not sure when it came out. The best cooperative based game ever. The versus is very rewarding when played with friends. * Terraria -- as odd it is for me to enjoy sandboxes, this one is actually quite interesting. A buffed, 2d minecraft. * Warhammer 40k DoW2 Last Stand -- Been playing this for ages, but I'm a warhammer fan. * F.3.A.R -- Great coop story that you could enjoy if you and your SO are into FPSes and horrors. Also, quite good coop online modes -- worth the buy * Hunted: The Demon's Forge -- a great 2 player coop, story driven RPG. If you like fantasy, you might enjoy it with your SO. Come to think of it, I can't find in my head any good cooperative RPG games, save for the awesomeness that is Diablo 1/2. I'm not counting any of it's inferior spin offs such as Locke or anything. Geez, now there is a good market... Hush, you didn't hear what I just wrote! |

I'm currently playing Dragon Nest and Dungeon Fighter Online. These are both action MMOs so combat is more involving than your typical point and click MMO.

Have you tried Rainbow Six: Vegas 1 & 2? Awesome if you are looking for co-op play with friends. Only 4 players though so don't have too many |

No kidding. It can be tough if people take the game too seriously (which is often the case with randoms) but if you do it with friends who are there to have a good time and can be friendly with criticism, it's really, really engaging. It doesn't really have a persistent character system which detracts from RP opportunities if you're into that, but you can still do a little bit during a match. And you definitely have the ongoing rewards where you gain points from playing (more for doing well) and advance your account from one match to the next, but it doesn't feel like a grind because the game is actually rewarding to play without the added unlockables. |

Played LoL a few times. Got bored quickly -- I'm not one for loosing, and randoms are just too random. And my friends aren't aces in the fast response and tactics division, so unless I can solo, such a game is beyond my grasp.
Plus, say what you like, but it is very repetetive -- once or twice I only got to a situation when it was interesting, as the tides were changing dramatically fast. Oh well, just 3 more weeks till I'll be whoopin heretic ass all over the place :D |

Terraria I've played and had a full set of the strongest armor within a week...don't like the lack of a creative outlet to supplement the adventure aspect. I'm holding out for the big minecraft patch.
L4D 2 I own and play from time to time, I don't have many friends who also play :/ I might try out LoL if the AI is sufficiently challenging, games like sc2 that can potentially pit you against extremely hard players can get nervewracking, and I prefer not to play against friends 1 on 1. |

The AI is meh. They compensate for their lack of insight by having ridiculous reaction times and, on harder difficulties, by getting free items that they didn't earn. You do have to learn a lot of important game skills in order to defeat the AI opponents - such as positioning, harassment trading, etc. - but once you figure out their routine, it becomes a little bit exploitable. |

I used to play WoW and Age of Conan.
I was in the top raiding guild on the server in each. Never liked MMO PVP |

It mostly seems to be about discussing strategy and tactics as well as funny stories for those who already play the game. It's perfectly on-topic to address pros/cons of it as compared to other games in this thread. (HoN and DotA2 notwithstanding.) |
