What would you prefer to do in general? (Assuming you can)

I suppose It could be a variation of the above choices, but for the most part I follow rules that make coherent sense and don't conflict with my own personal code of ethics or morals.

Rules are meant to be questioned. Nothing worse than following a set of rules and having NO idea why. At a certain level of intellect or competence, it should be mandatory to investigate why a rule exists.
Of course at a certain level of naivette/danger, rules may be necessary. |

I tend to bend the rules since this confuses the rule enforcers who are used to direct confrontations (I'm talking in very broad terms). At times I prefer discussing them and eventually directly opposing to them if compromise is impossible or insufficient or just avoiding them and go on about my business.
If the rules are those of the state I tend to follow them. Opposing to them is not to be done lightheartedly, since the risks are high. |

I find that I'm energized by working people up by breaking the rules that are not written -- AKA social mores -- and I laugh when people get angry at me because they are following a rule that isn't really there. So I take advantage of all the quirks in society that I technically can't get in trouble for.
Although, unfortunately, breaking these social mores have been made into a form of harassment. Which I find curious, particularly since harassment is normally directed at a particular person. It's not that way anymore. Damn political correctness and all those morons who have no sense of humor. |

I do all of those from time to time, but my preference is to change/better them. Rules often protect me from idiots, heh.

I think most rules should be considered more like guidelines; sometimes it's a good idea to follow them, sometimes it's not.
I definitely am a fan using flaws in existing rules to my advantage, however To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts. |

Make them, break them, change them, and better them.
I won't say that they're all crap, and I won't expect people to just accept them. |

In general, I follow to help set a good example in a team environment. All of the above are acceptable depending on the situation.

My opinion on rules is that that's exactly what I do. ...Wait, that's not what you meant, is it?
I think most rules do exist for a reason. I'm not saying that all of them do, or that their reasons are particularly good or bad. I also don't support changing them unless there's a good reason to do so, or if their reason for existing is terrifically stupid. Change is usually a pain in the neck, and sometimes it's more hassle than it's worth. |

Ignore them wasn't available so loopholes it is. Rules that I see the reasoning for I follow, rules that I don't... not so much. Mostly I just don't know what the rules are and only find out when I've broken one because someone tells me. A lot of rules are never enforced so there is not much point in worrying about what the rules are.

I had to vote "break them" because it's an instinct practically, even when I know it's not necessary. Every time I encounter a rule I started asking myself "Is this rule actually necessary?" and then "Will anything actually happen if I break it?" I don't actually break the rules as much as I would like to say otherwise, but my inherent thought process leads me down that path almost immediately.

Rules are a tool whose purpose is to help achieve a desired end. When a tool no longer produces a desired result there are two options - discard the tool or repair it.

I think "exploit them" is somewhat of a misnomer... is mastery of how to use the rules so bad?

In general, I don't like breaking rules just for the sake of breaking them–I care that much about what people think about me (well, more like about what I do coming back to bite me in the butt later), at least. But I do have this strange tendency to be the exception in a lot of official cases: for my first semester in college, I got myself out of an intro course, for example. It wasn't that I'd studied the material before; I just wanted to be ahead. Now I'm planning on doing the same thing with another intro course I don't want to take (but this time there's a placement test, so I have to study). In high school, I took state exams at funny times because I went out of town over the summer a few times, so I took exams I was supposed to take in June the next August or January. The second time I petitioned the administration to let me do such a thing, I remember someone looking at me coldly and saying something like "This isn't supposed to be the norm, you know" as she signed it.

i think about a rule and decide weather i think that the world would work out if everyone followed it. or rather, everyone governed by it followed it. if i find a rule that makes for unfair conditions and the possibility of an impossible situation, i mock it. i mock it in front of the maker if possible, and if not, i mock it in front of people that are following it. i believe many rules should be protested. for example: at my high school, and many others, the punishment for skipping school was suspension.... i mocked that one a lot. it seems to make the problem worse.
