I've heard of it aswell. A problem with veggie oil is that it turns thick and syrup like when cold. Same thing with petroleum diesel which crystalize in cold. As diesels work on the theory of self ignition they can be very reluctant to start when cold.
But it would be nice if you knew one deep fry restaurant and could take care of their oil. Cheap fuel costs.

The straight veggie oil option was not completely free from the fossil fuels, especially in the northern climates, and did not make sense if you were not a commuter. They used a two-tank system, in which the engine would be started on the diesel tank for the first few minutes (this will heat up the vegetable oil to lower the viscosity) and switched off to the second tank which has veggie oil. Before the shutting the engine down, the fuel source needed to be switched back to the diesel tank, so that the system would be purged of veggie oil. It was pretty complicated. The guys who were doing it were trying to make it sound so easy, but if you didn't like fiddling around with cars, it was a little overwhelming. Plus, the conversion only worked on disel engine-based cars. They now have a single-tank system, but I'm not familiar with that approach yet. It seems to work well in Florida and other warmer states.

That's a problem with diesels as you've to bleed the system. You can't have air in it. I think it's a problem with two tanks and shifting between them.
I actually think of converting my car for biogas, 'for fun'. It's a carburettor engine. So I must mount a mixer on the carb which mix it with air. A fuel injected car have gas injector on each cylinder instead.

In the old times 'wood gas' was popular. Works in a similar way just that a gasifier is onboard aswell, producinf fuel as you go along.

This has been untrue for a really long time now.

Oh? How is this untrue?

Wood gas seems to be a fun thing to try (probably not going to lead to a break through, but fun anyway). There are many interesting alternatives that people can try, but fossil fuel option has been well lobbied and cost-effective for so long. I guess the shift I see in fuel options and mechanical design innovations could excite many automobile enthusiasts. Have fun devising cool car conversions.

Cool! that is the same as free energy. I'd be the first to drive one of those when (if) available.

Here is an related update on the earlier comment I made about methanol in this thread:

After a two year delay,

is producing methanol fuel from its commercial-scale cellulosic ethanol facility in Georgia. The company initially said the plant in Georgia would be producing up to 20 million gallons of fuel in 2008. Then it got pushed back to 2009. It is now finally operating in the second quarter of 2010.

...

Given the slow start for cellulosic ethanol companies, it still remains to be seen whether Range Fuels can follow that time frame. The poor investment climate and the long delays in building cellulosic ethanol plants have severely set back the sector. But investors like Vinod Khosla of Khosla Ventures – which has backed Range Fuels – are still somewhat bullish on cellulosic fuels.

...

Khosla's interest is one benchmark some go by for credibility of a company.
