Yes, in the North-West. I think most young people know at least a little English. But a lot of them are uncomfortable speaking (apparently French students are very shy/easily embarrassed when it comes to trying to pronounce an accent right, compared to students in other countries) so they would be unwilling to speak it without a good reason. Plus it wouldn't be like speaking it with a Native speaker or teacher who can actually correct your accent.

Many people have the same problem with English, including myself. It's easy enough to find things to read, but difficult to find people to speak the language with.

Thanks, and it's French. Just checked wordreference, it gives me contempt as a synonym for scorn and I do think I've seen it used before (on the forum at least).

Interesting, I had no idea it was becoming archaic. What would be used instead? Scorn? And don't worry, English isn't my first language, so if everytime someone corrected me I blamed them for being pedantic, well, I wouldn't go far.
