For your birthday the forum should just let you have 24 hours of "no rules" where you can go crazy in P&CE

Yes, unfortunately, some Sanders supporters do... send me "Hey, here is an article showing Sanders meeting with Pope Francis..." I delete these rosey messages.

You know, I never said this, I don't think... because I did not believe it was possible (but I've been wrong before; I did not think Obama would get elected), so if Trump were to actually get the Republican nomination? I'd vote for Hillary. I never considered Gromit might not understand that, either. Sometimes I cut him off, make statements when I am tired, and he's too emotional, but end of the day, I'll "act" according to conscience. Trump? Uh-uh. Cruz? Uh-uh. I guess, in my as I wrote in that thread, I believe Bernie has a chance, & didn't "really" think past that. I'm thinking, now. Thanks for sharing in there. I can't... but I'm listening.

Fair enough; there's so much "running for President" done these days before one actually "runs for President".

Ah....I didn't even recall that he considered it then. I was just wracking my brain trying to figure out when he was in the primary.

No, really....when did Ryan run for President; I tried to double check that but I genuinely cannot find him as run in any primary.

Same as you. Not an HRC fan but I'm concerned about Sanders and his more rabid followers.

Oh, interesting. I've heard most of the ideas there before.

I think my issue is that we're generally seeing this homogenization of values. A good college education is good because it gets you a high paying job. A law is good because it encourages commerce. The best paintings are those worth millions of dollars being housed in museums. Everything has the same way of being good, and that way is deliverance to profit and efficiency. Whereas it intuitively feels to me that a law ought to be just, a painting beautiful, an education eye-opening and so on. That the virtue of one thing isn't the virtue of another, and in abstracting all virtues into monetary value, we lose sight of the distinctions between them.

Something like that, at least. It's difficult to articulate.

Yeah, it's troubling. A relative of mine recently tried to argue that, for something to be a "right", it must not inflict any economic harm on another person, and conversely, you have a right to do everything that doesn't inflict economic harm on another person. He's on the extreme side, but it's not so far away from ideas I see expressed elsewhere.

Michael Sandel wrote a book on the topic fairly recently, called "What Money Can't buy: The Moral Limits of Markets". I haven't actually read the book itself, but I listened to a fairly lengthy discussion with the author himself on a podcast I subscribe to (the Partially Examined Life, which I recommend highly). Maybe you'd find something there to inspire you.

Larkin, hypothetically, if I were to call someone an ignorant entitled cracker, would that be a personal attack? Even if it's true?
