There is a method of bio-turbination using daikon radishes. Diakon radishes are incredibly strong -- they will break up concrete if planted in a bed on top of the slab -- and they go deep. The thing is, you plant them in inhospitable areas, let them get as big as they can, go to seed, and then die and rot deep in the earth. They will stink like all getout, but what you end up with is tunnels of beautiful crumbly compost though even concrete.

I don't know if they will go through a lava cap, but maybe.

As for dogs: throw in a couple of squash or cukes. They have spiny leaves, cut the old spent ones and lay on the ground: very uncomfortable for dogs or cat's paws.
