Actually, there's the mitochodrial Eve bottleneck, the Y chromosome bottleneck, and the founder effect. There's more variation in Africans than the entire rest of the world. Even then, we've less variation than a troupe of chimpanzees. Your point about removing genes clearly proliferating could have merit nowadays. Genetic engineering would be preferable, but then we got Gattica and Brave New World shit to worry about.
