I am aware of that, and do not expect you to, nor do I need you to. However, I have developed some respect for you, and would wish you happiness and success. So I was providing some rational reasons that might aid your mind to accept what is rational and sensible, and to reject what is irrational and insensible. So I have some hope for you. But I still know that it takes time to change one's early-reinforced neural connections, and that sometimes, even when rational reasons are presented, it's not always the problem that the mind rejects. So I only hope that you will come to a more successful view, in your own time.

"if you tell people what you want they will withhold it out of spite." => sounds like a real douche, i.e. the person doesn't like you. It's sensible to cover your ass, with someone you don't yet know well. But if you do anything that isn't on the fence that way, and shows your hand, you're letting the spiteful person know that you don't trust them, and then they'll find another way to spite you, via other people, who are more trusting.

"Because I'm awkward about expressing my feelings and don't like letting people know what I want/need" => If you do that with people who are your friends, lovers, or anyone who clearly cares about you, you're acting like they are your enemy. How would you act, if someone you cared about, treated you like you hated them? 'Nuff said.

Learn that your parents gave you incomplete instructions. Make them rational, or you'll be irrational. Complete them to be things that make reasonable sense that would benefit you, or you'll be doing stuff that would make reasonable sense that would harm you.
