I agree that there is a significant difference in motivation between someone who gets pregnant because they wanted to (selfish), and someone who didn't initially want to, but chooses to do what they believe is the "right" thing in keeping the child (self-sacrificing). Parenthood always involves sacrifice, but yeah--it's different.

Didn't answer in-thread because the thread is stupid. I do think there's something to your comment, though.

Well, I think part of this has to do with white guilt. It's not that educated white liberals don't care for Southern culture (because it's associated with racism?); many have little interest in the culture of other Western countries as well (and I'm talking about the really liberal ones). Hardly any educated liberal Americans I know take an interest in French or German culture, whereas they take interest in non-Western cultures- not because they're uninteresting or they're thinking of Nazis, but because they are Western. In many ways, I see their cultural appropriation of non-Western cultures as thoughtless and problematic; not on the same level as xenophobes, but you can't help but feel it's a bit of a fad to them. To what end? Sometimes it looks like to assuage their own feelings of guilt. Other times it seems that they're BORED with it, probably because schools stopped teaching the Western classics and America's Judeo-Christian core is diminishing in power, and all the classical writers are dismissed out of hand as "dead white men".

As a bicultural person, I love both parts of my heritage, both the Asian and the Western. It makes me sad on both levels that these people appropriate my culture like a fad, and they're neglecting their own highly colorful, bewilderingly profound traditions. I'd like Western cultural traditions to survive and Eastern cultural traditions to be given due respect without becoming faddish or trivialized, but these people do neither.
