I can honestly say I've never intentionally killed another organism. There is a reason for it, although it's not a perfect one.
Do you realize the clothes on your back, the food that you eat, a large percentage of everything you do in life (unless you are a free living nomad <-I'm not entirely sure if this would even be true) indirectly kills things as well?
I don't recall ever saying that meat was necessary. I've only said that, in my opinion, there is no ethical issue in eating animal products. If I were to become a vegetarian, it would be for the sake of the earth not for the (non-endangered) animal.
I would agree that, given our population size, it would probably be a lot easier on the earth to rid meat consumption. I doubt we could totally get rid of it (assumption based on human stubbornness), but we could tone it down to a sustainable level.
