The higher vs lower state stuff sounds like rock queenery and pretense. SWANS, for example, shows us a dramatic old shit -> new shit transition. There's a clear continuity of concept. It's distinct from this old band / new band same brand Tool business.

Compared to strummy pop pap like Creed or Panic! at the Disco, sure, a bit, arguably. But compared to any blackened and slimy slab of Undertow? Pure wank. Keenan was off screwing around with APC when this lalurtleturtlesaurus nonsense was being algorithmically ticked and added up by the band's copy of Windows Calculator and, if it weren't for the legacy of the Tool brand driving interest, nobody aside from the errant pot-smoking Rush fan would care about this album.

THAT is what they decided to cast into the wake of AEnima, which was probably one of the finest albums ever put to this genre of music. Seems to me that most people sucking this album's dick end up simulating taste by echo, wearing albums like prestigious ties, car colors, and tshirts. History will fuck them all.
