    Interesting, Monte. I have been facing some situations like this myself lately. This is helpful. As an extrapolation, though - how does one conquer details?

    I admire James Galway. He started playing the pennywhistle as a child before he got seriously involved with the flute. I had a recorder when I was a teenager but I never developed an interest in it for some reason. The pennywhistle, however, has struck my fancy.

    Dear Professor, I seen that dum old joke about 'Christ has returned and he's pissed' in introductions. Decided not to weigh in. I think a username such as that would put a distracting spin on one's forum persona.

    I've taken up yet another musical instrument. The mail-order retailer I use for music supplies sent me a $20 credit, and on a whim I ordered an Irish pennywhistle. The first tune I went through was 'Amazing Grace'. See? I'm not all bad. Many ancient and beautiful melodies originated in the British Isles.

    It's gratifying to start back reading music a little. I've been off the piano for some time. The whistle is fun to play. I'll need practice to get a nice tone and accurate pitch. Music study is good for my scattered mind. I have to focus on the music and 'let the world go by', as my piano teacher used to say. It's a Zen thing, baby!

    Cheers monte, i'm fairly sure i figured it out.
    The tricky part is that maybe the initial velocity and the acceleration vector dont have the same orientation and direction, so you would need to break the problem into the i,j components and use the formulas for uniformly accelerated motion in each of those directions

    Say I have a 34100 lb (earth weight) rocket in outer space with two constant forces acting on it:
    F1 = (-121i + 350j) lb
    F2 = (40i + -66j) lb

    It has an initial velocity of (69i + 15j) ft/s

    I need to find how far it's traveled after 34 seconds
    --
    I thought you would add the two force vectors which would equal (-81i + 284j) lb and get the resultant vector and plug it into the equation F=m*a to find acc. Then use the resultant of the velocity vector, the acc, and time in a constant acc. equation. This didn't give me the correct answer, what am I doing wrong?

    But... but you're Monte! You were probably like 7 years old.

    This isn't exactly my first Calculus class. I took some in high school when I had a bad case of senioritis. I didn't much feel like doing my homework and when my mom found out she made me go back and do every single assignment. She still laughs about that.

    Puppies are always cute, so you must be a pretty formidable combination too!

    Anyway, due to work I haven't had much time or energy to study or do homework for my Calculus class, so I'm getting by on a low B. Not exactly the world's best student.
