Meh... just hack it. For windows I hope. Otherwise... you'd have to also learn the OS.

I would start with Oracle for Windows and I would read the install manuals very carefully. Last I worked with Oracle it was 9i (the OO version) on Solaris. Very complex and lots of patches for the OS. You are embarking on a daunting task. Is there a way you could get your employer to spring for a class? Saying that Oracle is complex is an understatement.

Oracle - more power, more features, highly complex environment with lots of tools, runs on many platforms, more pay, harder to learn.

As an older and practical guy, I would recommend Oracle. Used to be very lucrative but now there is high saturation of Oracle certified techs. Plus lots of Oracle gurus in India and Easter Europe. Nonetheless, lots of opportunities as DBAs and Basis SAP techs since a lot of SAP runs on Oracle. For smaller scope apps (and lower pay) MSSQL. If developing for yourself... I'll post in the thread in a minute because I think the HackerX may want to elaborate.

    Re SQL:
Lots of great tutorials on the web. But you're better off with a manual of the product you're going to use. If Oracle, best to get a PL/SQL manual. I would really look at SQLite though. Start with their FAQ and continue with the hundreds of of examples on the web.
