I have a number of books on permaculture including Bill Mollison's original 1978 book.
You are right, it is a geek's approach to agriculture.
It appeals to me because I think that humans try too hard to control their environment, rather than working with it. Permaculture aims to integrate low impact agriculture into the environment.

Management creates more problems which creates more management.

Not disputing that.
