People don't usually pre-emptively straw man you in real life. This is rather long but is pretty much the BEST thing I have ever read on why discussions of gender issues inevitably turn toxic and horrible.

I have had the misfortune of meeting people who actually argued like people do on the internet with yelling and grandstanding, and they were all ideologues: Objectivists, Ron Paul supporters, Black Hebrew Israelites, angry feminist activists and Christian evangelicals to name the most memorable. I guess the lesson here is that people won't listen to discussion and argumentation if they don't value those things in the first place. And that when you see someone just shut down discussion of one of their values, there's a good chance that value wasn't formed rationally.

HA, that reminds me of myself. I never liked to tell other people about who I was in a relationship because it was more special to me to just have it involve only we two. As soon as whoever I was with would start telling other people about it I would think, "Well... this has turned into something completely different." It goes from an interaction between two people to being part of this whole communal thing where there are expectations, traditions and obligations that neither person really wants. Fuck that.
