Because it seems that a lot of us have cats...
And I'm the only one who has dogs...

People always assume that because I have cats, it's because I'm not a 'dog person'. I like cats and dogs for different reasons. I live in an apartment and already have two cats, so getting a dog just wouldn't be a responsible or practical decision.
I prefer dogs and other pets, so that's how I voted. I have a cat, but it wasn't because I was out looking for a cat, rather, it was because a cat in need of a home happened to ingratiate itself to me. If I didn't have the cat, I would probably have nothing, a dog, or a rat.
Hum.
Yeah I guess living space must be the main problem for most people.
It's the same for me in terms of animal issues. I'd love to get a cat, I wanted to take an abandoned one in from the clinic once, but I figured one of my dogs would probably rip him apart :scared:

Not only the living space, but it's even more difficult to find dog friendly apartments than it is to find cat friendly apartments. Especially if you don't particularly care for toy dog breeds.
Like wolf, I didn't choose to get cats. I had a neighbor that moved and abandoned his pets. One of them was a neglected female cat that came to my house and had kittens. She was nearly skeletal and frail when I found her, with 7 kittens, so I took them in.

When I said living space I meant to include that... but yeah I can totally relate.
One of my dogs was not supposed to grow any bigger than 24 pounds, but he became pretty big (49 pounds, we got ripped off by the pet store). *And we nearly got kicked out from the condo we used to live in. *The only thing that saved us is that the bunch of old people who have lived there for a LOOONG time and the maintance crew loved my dogs and continuously stood up for us.
I'm not that fond of toy breeds myself... it's so... against nature :o

Cats are awesome random WTF moments (at least mine are) and dogs are very loyal and good companions. However, considering the state of our dog, I think that whenever I get a dog, I need at least two, so they can play with one other. It's just that they get too lonely by themselves.

I only like certain types of dogs...the non-hyperactive-barking ones. *My parents have two mini-dachsunds and two german shepherds, and I pretty much hate the german shepherds because they're loud and needy and they'll knock you over.
Aside from that, it's just easier to own a cat. *I'm a lazy person, I don't want to be walking a dog every time it wants to go pee, and finding a place with yard is a pain in the ass.

The problem with having 2 is that one will always dominate the other... I sometimes feel bad for getting the second one, because she OWNS my other dog.
German Shepherds.
I always thought they were very one-person dogs and... INTJ-like. I've always liked german shepherds...
But if you walk the dog at certian times in the day, you wouldn't have to take it out whenever it wants. My dogs have the 3-walks-a-day schedule down. They literally adjusted their water intake rate to the times we go to walk them.

Mine is alright. I believe he's an introvert. He occasionally he'll come and rest his head on your leg when you sit on the couch, but otherwise he'll be off somewhere else. I love my dog... he's a lot like me actually.
Maybe he's an INTJ :P

dogs...
any being that would risk their life to protect my wellbeing is alright with me
There's been stories of all kinds of animals risking their lives for their human companions. *Well animals with a pretty well developed cerebral cortex anyway.
It essentially comes down to the how good the bond you develop with it is.

i like both cats and dogs, but i tend to appreciate dogs more.
tell you what though, i always liked keeping fish. mainly "fancy" types of goldfish. orandas, lionheads, black moors. i enjoy setting up and maintaining a tank with live plants too. we haven't had an aquarium in a long time, but it's under discussion for the future.
i also want another dog, but i would rather it be an "outside" dog. we already have a little terrier mix that spends most of her time inside. that will probably change once i fence in our back yard.
I prefer cats over dogs. I have three cats, one Bangle and two Foreign White cats who are brother and sister. The bangle cat can play fetch with stuffed animals or with coins as well. Cleaning the litter box out daily is a small price to pay for not having to wake up to let the dog out or to take the dog out. I would like to get a Serval cat eventually, but they are quite pricey so that probably won't happen anytime soon.

When I was younger we used to keep fish. I don't like them so much now though. The tank tends to smell and I have an aversion to yucky water, so telling me to clean it is ultimate torture. I'd rather pick up dog feces/cope with cat litter any day.

I'm a dachshund person. My dachsie's name is Deputy Dawg. He is a black and tan smooth-haired miniature dachshund who just has to be in control. I think he's an ENTJ.
My previous dachsie was a black and tan long-haired miniature dachshund with the opposite personality. He was very meek and never met anyone he didn't like.
I have had four black and tan dachshunds in my life - 2 short-haired and 2 long-haired and one red long-haired. Just love 'em.
I don't like cats.

For some reason I like dogs better. If you want a self-maintaining pet, why get one at all? Getting a cat to me is almost like getting a fish. A fish that will scratch you.

Speaking as a person who has had both cats AND fish, I have to say that cats are nothing like fish, and that fish are in no way self-maintaining. Fish are just as dependent on you to feed them and keep their habitat clean as cats are, without the interaction that a person and a cat can have.

Cats, all of the way, yo! I was raised by a cat and always had them while growing up. For some reason (mayhaps we made a bit of money?), my evil parents never fixed our cats, so we were always getting new litters. Cats are fun to watch, and some seem to think that they are having a conversation with you. Some learn tricks (one that was rescued came with the trick of playing dead on command, which was kind of weird). If you have indoor slash outdoor cats, the only thing that you really have to worry about it taking one to a vet for getting into some kind of trouble. They have way more personality. Sure, I have heard of the odd canine who seems more catlike, but most are all the same and boring. I am an especially loyal person to the select few, but very few who are instantly thought of as loyal seem cool, to myself. I usually find myself pitying those who follow leaders blindly.

I like dogs and cats, but I've always had dogs. I have a golden retriever and I'd say he's an ESFJ. He's very loyal and is always up for whatever I want to do. I like rodents too, especially rats. They don't require constant attention and they adore me ;).

I used to be in complete love with hamsters. I memorized every single hamster fact known to man. Now, I suppose they're still my favourite animal, but as pets I think they die too fast. :(
That's the main reason I don't like having pets. They die before me.
And btw other than in the pet-having sense I don't see how you can prefer one kind of animal to another...>_>...I know I'm not exactly comparing apples to apples here but that's a little like racism or sexism. xD

But that's preferring one animal to another, not an entire species to another.

well i meant that the preference level is the same... you like one person more than another b/c of their traits that differ from another...
it's the same for animals... it's not like we're saying one animal SUCKSSSSSS and another is WONDERFUL AND CAN'T BE BEATEN BECAUSE IT IS SUPERIORZZZZ!!!!!!!

I like dogs and plan to get one someday, but I find that I prefer cats. Cats give me the space I need. Dogs are too clingy and demanding.
I've also owned frogs, mice and other small animals of that sort. They are nicely low maintenance yet amusing and cute.

We have a border collie who's pretty much ESFP and absolutely insane, but I love him anyway. Despite owning a dog, I don't actually have a preference for any particular type of animal (except that I hate hamsters) - but I'm quite allergic to cats, which kind of precludes owning them :(

Other. House rabbits -- they're like a cross between cats & dogs. Intelligent, litter-box trained, comes when you call, don't have to take them for walks. Most people think they're boring and dumb and keep them in cages or hutches. *Anything* would seem boring and dumb if kept in a cage all day.

Ha, cat litter boxes smell like death to me. Cat poo is possibly the most foul stench I've ever encountered. Whenever I go over to people's houses I can usually instantly tell if they have a cat or not. The odor is there no matter how hard you try to get rid of it.
I've met plenty of cats that are clingy, at least the same amount of clingy dogs I've known, so I don't know where this reputation comes from. I'm feeding my friend's cats while she's away on holiday. They are both the most clingy and needy creatures ever, and incessantly follow me around from room to room, meowing and rubbing against my legs :yuck:

I have both a dog and cats and I like them all, but for different reasons.
Our dog is very much a "one-family dog" (German Shepherd-Black Lab mix) who loves us to death and always tries to defend us from (almost) everyone else. We also have two cats (one stray black-and-white shorthaired one which we rescued and which is rather wild and spends most of her time outside) and one gorgeous, but rather dumb, gray persian.
What I like about our dog and most others is that they are very loyal, always extremely happy whenever you come home or pay them any kind of attention. It is very cheering to come home from Uni and be greeted by a dog so happy to see you.
I greatly prefer large or medium-sized dogs to little ones though, often those will yap all the time which I find annoying.
What I like about cats is that they have some of the traits I admire most in people: they always have their own ideas of how they want to do things, are never submissive and usually very individualistic and independent. They are also more interesting to watch because their actions are usually totally unpredictable. But, if they don`t feel like being petted or playing with you, there is nothing you can do about it.
I once heard a quotation on that topic which always seemed rather fitting to me:
"Dogs have owners, cats have staff."

yayy it worked. erm not too adept with image sharing, having been on 28k for so long, but now on satellite.
I like my elegant cat for her independence and keeping mice and rats at a distance otherwise the floors would seethe with wildlife.
The dog is my eyes and ears on this property, alerting me to anyone or anything venturing onto these five acres. And both the dog and cat have bailed up snakes for me to deal with them at times.
The puppy is a replacement, for when reality bites the 13 year old.
All of the above are a marked improvement over having children, who are the ultimate crap shoot in life. And all are fixed being a responsible owner.

What about a Dingo, mate. Wouldn't mind rearing one from a puppy. They are highly intelligent, cute, don't bark and develop lifetime bonds with family, either Dingo or human. They can use their paws like hands, and climb rocks and trees to survey their surroundings from high places.

Siberian husky's coat colours and wider face PWNS Norwegian elkhound's IMO. I think Norwegian elkhounds actually look more similar to German Shepherds (minus the loopy tail).
I'm personally more fond of German shepherds than either of the above. Though they smell really bad, their personalities are generally very INTJ :lovestruck::lovestruck::lovestruck:
