Reproductions and Forgeries vs. Originals.

Since watching The Thomas Crown Affair I've had a soft spot for reproductions and forgeries. I understand that great art has its place in human history and growth, but they belong in art galleries and museums not homes. In homes we should have Reproductions only so that we can enjoy it without detracting from others enjoyment.

A good reproduction is exactly the same in every form except it isnt worth as much.

What are your thoughts on the matter?
Are originals really worth more than reproductions in terms of enjoyment?

i don't think reproductions that are "exactly the same in every form" are interesting. what is interesting is when the artist has mastered a famous artist's style and then turns to create there own original work.

It's the pleasure of having the art in your room to enjoy, but not as a print.
I agree that reproducing a style is also very nice. However that is not what I meant.

Absolutely true! With one exception. If one is collecting artwork as an investment, the reproductions are not going to appreciate (monetarily) the way the original artwork does.

That too is true. But I do not collect for financial value, I am one of those who appreciates them for their beauty.

Wow, I could agree with every post thus far. Now something I find incredible are reproductions that are exacting in level of detail such as the slightly smudged stalk of corn in the third picture frame you can see in the house through the window in the American Gothic. If a forger can catch that, and doesn't try to pass it off as the real thing I want it.
