I'm sure there are more than a few techies here, so i thought i'd go ahead and ask.

I have a slimline PS2. Works fine... until today. I just forked out $100 on Guitar Hero World Tour, only to find that when i start it up i get a "Disc Cannot be Read" error. The game is BRAND NEW, and every other PS2 game i have works fine.

I can't seem to find anything about this particular game anywhere online just yet... seeing as it only came out in stores yesterday.

Any suggestions guys?

(and i know cleaning the laser would be a good place to start, however like i said the PS2 works just fine with any other game)

Thanks all

Take it back if you can.

Manufacturing processes are getting more and more lax these days.

#1. Try the disk on a different PS2 and try a different disk of the same game on your PS2. Establish that it is for certain your system and not the disk or the game itself being the problem.

#2. Googlebomb the interweb. Check the gaming/tech boards to see if there are known problems with the game/system and if there are simple fixes out there.

#3. Go to the shed and get a manual force applicator (hammer)...apply force to PS2...return bits of PS2 to the store and claim it was a defective product.

I think the other manual force applicator (screwdriver) applied to the disc would be equally effective.

But yes, I'd definitely try to see if the disc works in another ps2 first.

#2 If it's the PS2, take it back. If it's the game, take it back.

PS2 is old and past warranty, no go. but it works fine with every other game.

ive read online that a few other people are having the same issue with the slimline ps2 in particular not reading the game.

would there be any particular reason why certain games wouldnt work?

PS2's have incredible fickle disc readers...that little optical eye that passes over the disc has been known to come loose and move around

back in the day, I could get games to work by laying the PS2 upside down or on its side and get certain games to work that otherwise wouldn't

Well, there isn't just one "type" of ps2 but a number of revisions including the slimline types.

I'm still more inclined to think the problem is with the game and not the console.

Even if the fault lies with the console, it's still a problem with the "PS2" game for not working on a "PS2" console.

nope, it is most certainly the game. took it back and got a different copy - same problem. it must be some sort of conflict with my version of slimline ps2 and the new game. damn... i cant afford an upgrade right now. guess no guitar hero for me :(

If you took it back and got another disc, it is because you need a PS3 now.

i understand that. however, my employer does not - they refuse to pay me more money so that i may afford the pleasure of a new gaming system.

GRRRRR.... this is NOT cool. i will be calling Activision tomorrow during business hours to give them a piece of my Guitar-Hero-Addicted mind.

I've had this problem before you just need to pull apart the PS2 and clean the lens of the disc reading laser.

I would estimate about 90% of problems with video game consoles can be fixed by pulling out a power chord or cleaning out the dust (except if you have an XBOX306). Be sure clean your PS2 with a mini vacuum every month or so. I take care of my PS3 every fornight.
But seriously consider getting a PS3.
