How do you deal with uncertainty?
jonnyb
09-03-2010, 10:16 AM
Not as well as I do with known variables. Often uncertainty can freeze me up as I procrastinate dealing with it. I have a lot of original ideas but then get stuck implementing them cause of the inherent uncertainty of real life function. It is also one of my biggest reservations about making plans which involve other people because dealing with people is the most uncertain of all things.

09-05-2010, 08:17 PM
It's really cheesy. Two Christmases ago, I didn't know what to get my friends on an art student budget that would actually mean anything. I took my largest sketchbook and cut out a two-by-three-foot heart, then drew lines across it to make it appear as though it was made of dozens and dozens of puzzle pieces. In each piece, I wrote the names of my closest friends, then made a copy of the heart and cut out the labeled pieces. I took a picture of the whole heart and shrunk it down to postcard size and made multiple copies. I tucked each ''Puzzle Piece'' into a card, with the corresponding piece blacked out on the card so it appeared as though the piece was missing. Then inside the cards I wrote some sappy personal stuff or an inside joke, wished my loved ones a happy holiday, and sent them off. I wonder what I did with the original giant heart. It had over a hundred blank pieces, and some of those need names.

Yeah, I have a lucid dream where I'm skiing down an endless spiral staircase. My recurring nightmares involve a monster circling me in a dark room, threatening me and telling me God is angry with me. These days I keep dreaming that a friend of mine is in trouble and there's nothing I can do. Very unsettling.
RE MOON CHART: Yes, actually. I've always found that sort of thing fascinating.

My hair color. Had I been born redheaded, I would have been Rachel; brunette, Noel; I'm blonde, so I got the name of the biblical King David's second wife, all-around New Testament feminist badass. (Oh, and they picked out my brother's name the same way. It was a toss-up between Henry, Virgil and Chad. He's blond, so my big burly ESTJ diesel mechanic bro is affectionate referred to as The Chad Monster to take off the sting.)

Once, at about 2:30 in the morning while I was living in Florida, the land line rang and woke me up from a nap on the couch. There was no data on the Caller ID, and when I answered there was an echoing static sound. I said hello a few more times, then heard heavy breathing and a very, very deep voice drawled the word Hiiiiiii, and my name. My friend Heif is the only person with a voice that deep, so I said his name a few times. The voice laughed and hung up. I went back to sleep on the couch for a few more hours and confronted Heif about it the next day. He would have told me if he were pranking me, but to this day he insists he wasn't. I have no idea what that was.
