Pneumonia during grad school, the winter of 03.

I didn't have a car, and no real income to speak of so I had to move down to Kent for grad school. That winter, just before the Christmas break, I developed pneumonia so severe I had to be hospitalized for the first week with bed rest and IV antibiotics. I was too sick to go home for the rest of break even after I was let out of the hospital, so I stayed in my apartment. It was the toughest week and half of my life because I would not stop coughing, could not sleep unless I sat up, and was suffering from depression over the loss of romantic relationship.

Whoa, that sounds rough. I suffered from allergic asthma when I was in kindergarten. One day while I was sleeping I couldn't breathe well. Duh. It drove me crazy since I couldn't breathe. It was hell.

Stratego

Again, school related.

I had a chance to spend the weekend with some friends at a cabin in PA, so I left to go stay with them even though I had the rought draft of my Master's Thesis due that coming Monday. I had put it off, and put it off, and was in dire straits. I got home Sunday afternoon and did not finish the draft until 6:30 the next morning. I crashed and slept for three hours, then stumbled my way to school and turned the f**ker in. My prof later complimented me on the writing style, said it was "lively" and "incisive," and later I shook my head, remembering how tired I was when typing it, feeling like I was somewhere between awake and asleep.

(Got a chicken hoagie delivered from this place called Euro Gyro at 2 in the morning just before they closed. I was starving and it was the best sandwich in my life.)

I had to pour in the mayonaisse, vinegar, etc. By the time I was done I never wanted to eat/smell/touch coleslaw again--that has persisted till this day.

Whats your biggest fear?

Stratego
06-13-2009, 07:52 PM
Mad women. Hard to describe, and it might sound silly at first, but nothing scares me more than a white-faced, insane female. I'm not talking about a mother-in-law from hell type but more like the little Japanese girls in movies like The Ring, when they come on screen with their dark hair covering their faces, and they're more like a wild animal than human. Same thing in the form of a male just doesn't scare me. So psychoanalyze that to your heart's content.

06-14-2009, 12:01 AM
That's a toughie. I tend to challenge fear. Its always been something that I've been drawn to understand and conquer. I used to think my biggest fear was failure, then realized I'm too determined to succeed regardless of what happens. Failure is actually just more of an exhausting annoyance in the process.

Guess that leaves that moment of fear when/if I reach out to someone I may be able to connect with. It is one my most vulnerable and underdeveloped positions. :curtain:

Who do you love the most?

Stratego
06-16-2009, 08:19 AM
For Rho's question:
I think certain members of my family were nuts, to put it bluntly. Most especially my maternal Grandmother and Uncle. I don't mean to sound harsh or suggest that I lack compassion or understanding, but these two individuals were so neurotic and selfish that being around them was exhausting; they sucked all the energy out of the room with their endless passive/agression, crippling anxiety, repetative behavior, and oversized egos. I have vowed to never be anything like that.

My younger sister.
