View Full Version : So where'd your display name come from?

Where indeed...

I always wonder about these things. *There's always a story behind these things...

Mine actually came from way back when I was an anime/J-pop geek and studied Japanese. *It is actually a translation of one of the characters in my Chinese name. My friends started using it as my nickname, and I've pretty much stuck with it ever since.

Tarrick

By display name, you mean user name/alias. I see.

Tarrick is derived from Taran, a character from The Prydain Chronicles. I wanted a ending that worked, but hard a harder, clicking sound to it.

Cato the Younger
09-30-2007, 02:48 AM
I'm named after a Roman politician from the times of Julius Caesar. He was a stoic and known for his stubbornness and immunity to bribes.

Also, there's a Libertarian think tank called the Cato Institute. I found that fitting.

I've used other nicknames on forums, and I've just gotten sick of invented names. I've met people in person who I've known online and they've called me those names. It is awkward.

Since this forum was so new, I thought I'd just claim my real name!

I had that problem too. I started meeting this long time friend, and he is one of like... 3 people who call me Rei in real life. Then this summer he suddenly started calling me by my real name... and it was just as awkward. :-/

qwerty
09-30-2007, 06:03 AM
It came from the top line of my keyboard :)

Why qwerty? Because I don't like the fact that stuff I wrote 15 years ago is still online and I can't remove it, so the chances of anyone linking me to qwerty isn't so easy.

Yeah, I should have thought of that. Not 15 years ago, but when I was 15... and that's embarassing enough. But I didn't think I was important enough for anyone to actually bother look up.

However, it seems I am mistaken *cough*

Apococlock
09-30-2007, 05:01 PM
I got sick of using my other alias, and I just liked the flow of this word over that one.

You decide, Fr0zEnPh0eNiX...

...or Apococlock?

The first name came from and idea which was inspired by Chrono Cross.

The name I'm using now occurred to me when I was studying up on the doomsday clock. It should be obvious as to why.

Qwerty, your name is awesome.

Mine is my initials, added to my love of irony. I love books and Montag burned them ;)

Doppelbock
10-01-2007, 01:26 PM
My display name comes from my first name Doppel and my last name Bock. It's a stupid tradition in my family to append our names into a single name, like my father Weisenbock (Weisen Heimer Bock), etc. Doppelbock just also happens to be one of my favorite beers, too. ;-)

I'd love for teleportation to be possible. You just can't walk fast enough to not feel like you're wasting time. :(

lol, all those stupid internet memes with the ROLFMAO and LOLLERSKATES and such pissed me off, so i took it to an extreme that most people don't like.

"Dude, my mom had cancer!"
"...Shutup."

quartertone
10-02-2007, 10:55 PM
It's a very small, mostly experimental musical interval. Half of a simitone.

I <3 music theory.

(for the longest time I thought <3 meant less-than 3. Such an intj)

Javenne
10-05-2007, 11:50 AM
When I was in Jr. High, I wrote a story and named the main character Javenne. And in my first forum and email, I use that name. Since I'm a scatter brain, I thought I just use 1 name for all forum, that way I won't forget my username.

OneBadMother
10-05-2007, 11:51 AM
Mine came from a name I started using for a MMORPG called Urban Dead.

"Shaft is one bad motherfu-"
"Shut yo' mouth!"
"Just talkin' 'bout Shaft!"
"We can dig it."

I learned in one of my classes that the Shaft archetype's been around since 1890. Weird, huh?

phoenix
10-05-2007, 02:00 PM
I've been using phoenix for years now...always uncapitalized.

It comes from my feeling of reconnecting with myself after escaping a controlling, degrading marriage. That went down in flames, and I'm the beast that has emerged.

Ian
10-05-2007, 06:05 PM
My neice could not say Ian (when very young, obviously) - came out ee-oh, with a Geordie accent - sort of stuck.

Quite like Jon's logic - so may as well just be Ian from now on.

GOD

Thought I'd already written my scribe here at an earlier date... evidently not...

Anyway, the Veneti (Gaul) were a tribe of people (around 50,000) based on the Atlantic coast of Brittany (France) and were originally from the general Denmark/Estonia region who rose to power due to the wealth they gathered from their superior knowledge of sailing. They traded Amber and traversed the waterways of central Europe in Pre Roman times. (They also sailed to Britain).

They lost a significant sea battle against the Romans and many fled to Britain and I suspect may have even gone as far north as Norway (speculation) beyond Roman control.

Its my very tenuous theory that these people may have had some bearing on the Vikings that appeared nearly 1,000 years later.

thegnat

from a joke on my first name.

one of my coaches calls me "the gnat bug" or "gnat bug"

My first name is Natalie. So Nat sounds like "gnat".

ShaiGar
10-19-2007, 08:45 PM
I have used Shai Gar as my screenname for the past decade, 10 years of Shai Gar has made the name grow on me in a big way. The name “Shai Gar” signifies two things; (1) My love of languages, and (2) my love of knowledge. Shai Gar is made up of 6 languages “Shai’tan Aus Garathenia” -

Shai = Fate (Egyptian),
Shaitan = The Adversary/Enemy/Opponent, or Evil, or analogous to Satan (Arabic),
Aus = From (German),
Gar = Spear (OldEnglish),
Gar = Hand (Mongolian),
Athena = Greek goddess of knowledge and civilised war.

The meaning of all of this combined is “The wielder of knowledge”.

I used that name for a character in singleplayer game i created, but never bothered getting around to having produced. still have all the notes for it somewhere.

D'oh! I wish I'd thought of that. Anyhow, I've used this name at other forums, so the consistency is nice. OWK are the initials of the coolest name in film history - Obi-Wan Kenobi!

Its from a Reality TV show in my country and "Hein" is also my first-name. Actually its not a real TV show but more an item on a show called "Man bijt Hond". It deals with 2 old geezers that collect used iron which they sell for a living. They constantly fight and both pretend to "know it better" than the other guy. Its really funny :D

orange
10-23-2007, 08:38 PM
In highschool I would pick a word to say randomly just to see how people would react. That got boring so I decided that the word had to have multiple definitions. After that I picked orange as my word (color, and thing to throw at people or eat). Soon after I started playing online games and needed a new name. I used orange and been using it ever since.

I was listening to Aarktica while registering here. They have song called "Nostalgia = Distortion", and I wanted that to be my name, but symbols aren't allowed. Finally, I thought of "Pointless Nostalgia" which is the name of another song I know, LOL... I feel so unoriginal now.

Fiordispina
10-27-2007, 12:41 AM
Percy Bysshe Shelley - 1820 - title of poem "Fiordispina". However, rather than topic of the poem I found the word Fiordispina closer to my personality - loosely translated it means Flower with thorns......

(damn! lost the letter ( ) ...the one that follows "a" on my key oard....need a new computer...shoot!)

Lethe
10-29-2007, 09:16 AM
Lethe was a greek underworld naiad and also a dark mythological river in Hades that erases memory of an individual as they drink from its waters.

Lethe was another Naiad, but her river was in the Underworld. The Lethe was the river of Forgetfulness and Oblivion. Lethe was a daughter of Eris. The rockin' thing about Lethe is that she stayed involved. A lot of these ladies did their own thing, but Lethe worked for a living. Well, now, I'm not sure that "living" is the right word, but anyway, the water from her river was given to those who died so that they might be freed from the lives they had lived before, that they might not miserably remember the earth and the pleasures of the mortality.

Lethe (LEE-thee). A river in Hades whose waters caused forgetfulness. It was on the banks of another Underworld river called the Styx that the shades, or ghostly remains, of the dead congregated to seek passage to the Afterlife. Unless they bribed Charon to ferry them across the stream, they wandered aimlessly on the near bank forever. But those who made it across the Styx did not have much more to anticipate. Once they had drunk from the waters of Lethe, they were left with nothing to reminisce about for eternity. *

TruorTupnm
10-31-2007, 05:47 AM
TruorTupnm = my real name in this silly little code that I came up with while taking a keyboarding class. Except that, the first time that I wrote it down (for yet another forum), I forgot a letter. It should technically be Truortupinm. I like Truor Tupnm better. Two five letter names. Most people's names don't sound like names, and I didn't somehow mold the code into something that'd give me a cool sounding name. ::)
