My posts are disappearing from threads!
Whats going on?

They might be getting deleted. Were they basically "Me too" posts, or something else that doesn't add anything to the proceedings?
You might not have posted them. Sometimes I think I posted something, but it turns out I didn't.
We could secretly hate you and enjoy screwing with your mind.
There could be some kind of technical thing. A problem with your internet connection, or something to that effect that would cause your computer to not to be able to send the required signals or whatnot.

If you quote someone's post and they decide to delete their original post. Your post will be deleted as well. It' like an unwitting victim.

Hm. I've looked through your post history for the last month and I can only find two deleted posts that weren't deleted by you. They were both short "me too" type replies. Was there something in particular that you've found missing? I can check it out if you direct me to the thread wherein you recall it having been posted.

If you mean to imply that the forum software automatically deletes replies to deleted posts, no, that's not the case. A user deleting his or her own post will not cause subsequent replies to be deleted. We do sometimes manually remove replies to posts that moderators have deleted, but that depends upon the reason for the original deletion and the content of the replies.

One of my threads was deleted. I did not get an email from the moderator. Another member said that he deleted it. I did not know that another member could do this. What am I missing here? Did he report the thread and a moderator deleted it, or can we just delete someone else's thread?
I am extremely confused by this.
If we are duplicating a topic, but looking for advice for a specific situation, why is this a bad thread?
Could someone please explain this to me?
I looked at the FAQ section, but I still did not understand what is going on.

What was the thread topic? It could have been moved and not deleted. When we do that, though, we usually leave a redirect for a few days in the system.
Members can only report threads and posts, and not delete or move them.
If it was a duplicate, it would almost certainly get merged. We tend not to keep a lot of duplicate threads going, it's too messy.

It was my post about drinking alcohol. I got a PM from another member who said that he had deleted my thread because there were other threads on the topic and then gave me the links to those threads. I was confused about the reasoning and I am still trying to figure out what happened.
My experience with other forums is that the moderator is the only one who is able to do this.

Perhaps it was a moderator and you didn't realize? Because only a mod can delete your thread. Also, yes, there are other threads about drinking, so I can see that it would get deleted or merged.

I suppose that makes sense, but that means that every time we want to start a thread, we must first do a search to see if anyone else has ever brought up the topic....read the other thread in its entirety.....then assess the potential value of a new thread....and then post....and hope that no one else decides to delete it because it may be too similar to someone else's thoughts.
I am not exactly sure why you cannot have more than one thread on the same topic. What am I missing?

We prefer to keep things more streamlined and organized, that's really why. Plus, it stops redundancy in individual posts.
You are right, you should do a search first. There are times when that's irrelevant, but common topics like relationships, religion, alcohol, general INTJ reactions/characteristics have often been posted and thoroughly discussed.

I haven't started a lot of threads but I do try to do at least a quick search to see if my specific topic isn't already out there. The one time I didn't search and started a limericks thread (shameless plug) (http://intjforum.com/showthread.php?t=6779) I very quickly found out I had duplicated a topic. I was called out, and rightfully so.

It was a moderator that deleted your thread. Moderators are the members with blue usernames, or you can see the full list here (http://intjforum.com/showgroups.php).

You're making this much more complicated than it is. You don't need to read the other thread in its entirety. You need to search for the topic you're interested in (I recommend a title search or browsing the subforum's active threads), read the original post to see if their discussion is the same thing you want to know or if there is something different about your topic (if it is the same, it might not be necessary to start a thread at all), and check the date on the thread (if the other thread has been inactive for more than a couple of months, it's okay to start a new thread on the same subject).
I am not exactly sure why you cannot have more than one thread on the same topic. What am I missing?
It's not having multiple threads on the same topic that is the problem, but having multiple active threads on the same topic. Having simultaneous discussions about the same topic is redundant, confusing, and pushes unique topics further down the list of threads.

That makes sense if it is something of a general nature. My mistake was not to mention in my particular thread that I was looking for specific advice for my own personal situation. I suppose that next time I will make sure that I address that in the title, so as not to confuse anyone into thinking that I was making some general statement about my topic.
It seems to me that there is no need for such strict control over threads that are not offensive to anyone, but I am still new here and learning the protocol. If my threads keep getting deleted, even after I do a search, then I will truly become paranoid, but as that was my first attempt, I suppose I will learn my lesson.
I just looked at the list of moderators. The person in question is indeed a moderator....which makes sense now. I was under the mistaken impression that a moderator would have to be an older member who had posted more or had a higher ranking, but that does not seem to be the case in this forum.
Again, I am just getting used to this format.

I know you did. I did not know that you were a moderator. I thought you were a regular member, so I could not understand how you would be able to delete my thread. That was my mistake. I PMed you this morning to ask for an explanation...now I have it.
I am just trying to figure out how this forum works. I do not check it on weekends, so when I came in this morning and saw the email, I was confused. Thanks for the clarification.

They were agreements with anothers posts. I'll avoid that in future.

See, that does not make sense to me. Why would they delete something that expresses agreement? How is that a bad thing? It will take me a while to get used to all these rules, and the logic behind them.

Because simple agreement does not add to the conversation, it does obscure for substantial posts at times though. If you wish to express agreement, use the "comment on post" feature -- click on that phrase in the box of the person you agree with, and send them a comment. We all enjoy getting feedback.
