View Full Version : Why don't you use an Avatar?

I've noticed that several great post are being made by people without Avatars and I was wondering why don't you choose an Avatar? Is it just not wanting to be labeled/identified?

Also why the changing Avatars? For me it gets a little confusing, today for instance I thought I saw TLM's Avatar answering a question in the opposite gender until I looked back and saw his old one had a new owner. Just wondering.

notoppings, i dunno if i even have an avatar...i use firefox on a dialup connection. i turn off pictures so i don't see anyone else's avatar, or my own.....so, my answer (which i have learned to love)....i dunno. i think i have 'the librarian', but i'm not turning on 'pictures' to wait for a half hour to see.....

Your Avatar comes through nicely, Pratchett is one of my favorites.

I don't use an avatar because I think that they give false impressions of posters and mislead readers into a bias of sorts based primarily on looks and visual qualities of such avatars. With that said, avatars improperly sway how people read and take said information within a post, depending on how each individual views someones avatar, either in a positive and pleasant manner or in a negative way.

If I ever did decide to use an avatar, I would never change it so as to keep a steadiness and security associated with the avatar of my choosing that would instill confidence and security with my postings over time as one would become familiar with said avatar.

And it would have a pink bow. You forgot that part.

I change mine occasionally on a whim to annoy people.

Boo!

I am at work when I post and I do not even have the avatar function turned on. I prefer to be as anonymous as possible and I feel that whatever avatar I would pick, would probably give out more information than I am willing to divulge.

I'm not sure why people wouldn't use an avatar...I suspect that being anonymous would come into it though.

In regards to TLM's avatar: if you've come across me before , you'll realise that he now has my old avatar as well as me having his old one.

Who are you and how did you get my avatar?

Okay...someone's been selling inside information...

There has to be a forum rule against this kind of thing. *Goes to pore over guidelines*

I catagorically deny any dealings with the avatar black market

I picked one from the gallery but I don't see it myself. I don't bother searching for an avatar. At another forum I didn't have an avatar either. So I asked if someone could make one for me and I've used it ever since (a couple of years).
However I'm in the process of making one now, so let's see if it shows up.

Edit: Ha! It's up "no text" hmm.. ok let's see if I get spanked.

The wolf avatar is great. I'm gonna design one soon for my posts, that is, maybe in next few weeks. My take on avatars: simple, beautiful, and long lasting are best. Changes are good too. What do y'all think about changing avatars, then after about 8 months, going back to a former one? Yuk?

HALP I'M TRAPPED!

When I joined I chose a forum avatar and as much as I'd be happy to change it now my irrational over-protective ownership of said avatar would bring forth primal instincts that would drive me to hurt any individual who was misfortunate enough to chose it as their own, so alas, I am stuck forever as the bat-winged pixie girl :(

That said I often have images switched off* so others not using one has little impact on me.

*Even if imiges were switched off, I'd still know if someone else used MINE!

INTJ forum has some crazy rules about avatar sizes, height, width so I didn't want to bother.

This is the first forum where everybody has avatars that are the same height and width. I've never seen this.

That's the difference between INTJs and the rest of the world. We can stick to reasonable rules.

I guess that avatars do give some insights of the owner/user however most are in fact anonymous enough that privacy is not compromised. Whilst I am still a relative newcomer I have become quite attached to my Av, which is from the forum, and don't know how I would feel about someone else using it if I changed it for a personal one. However I have a couple of works in progress just as experiments you understand. So maybe I will change eventually. While I am at it I could change my username as well.

Nevertheless when in Rome...., and although I can respect the rule I find none of the presized avatars desireable and they definitely don't represent who I am. I have attempted to resize some avatars that I liked however they would not fit still so it's not about anonymity or anything else but finding the task of complying to the avatar rules so arduous as to why bother. Besides ***** has gone to no avatars which I like because at least there my I.D. ("?") is unique enough to represent me.

I don't know a lot about computers and have never dealt with avatars so I didn't feel like putting the effort into it. Also, I'm pretty happy with my username and didn't want to add to it with a picture.

It seems that INTJs have superior technical skills when it comes to resizing avatars.

Now that's something to be proud of.

I resized my avatar, and followed the obnoxious golden rules, it still didn't show.
I just used one of the custom ones instead, though it was a painful choice.

Iv'e been intending to make an abstract one for some time. But it is not a high priority...I find it very hard to pick an image that sums me up or that I aspire to in some way. (I feel the same way about tattoos) I think Wapiti makes a very good point in his/her post regarding the trouble with perceptions and judgements that arise from graphical avatars. Part of the fun here is not really knowing who anyone is, in a sense. If people want to see what I look like they can get to know me personally, and we can trade. No one that iv'e talked with privately (bar one) has asked for a picture yet, so I guess its unimportant to most people.

I didn't have an avatar because I didn't choose one upon joining and then I couldn't find where to choose one. Now that I've actually bothered to search more than the major links I found the place and have added one. Now lets see if it shows up.

EDIT: Yes, it does. Yay.

When I look at someone's avatar, I generally get a feel for their personality and thought process better. Since I can't find an avatar of the style I want, I dare not choose one at all in the event that someone were to think something of me as something I'm not.

Hope that helps.

I'm glad you've done your research (or maybe i'm lucky enough to have another fan :D).

Seriously though, when I observe his charecter on the show, he could be my twin for all I know. I just feel such a strong connection to everything he says and does. So having an avy 115x145 of Sylar would be great.

Since there are very few of them around however, (and believe me I've searched), I've chosen to stay n00b as they say and remain without an avy.

I made one (http://drop.io/intjfsylar)for you. :)

BTW, if I was on that show, I think I would also have Sylar's power of "intuitive understanding." He is very interesting.

EDIT: Link should work now.
